It's 1990. Scene: Central City, somewhere in Midwestern America. Biker gangs roam the urban streets, wreaking havoc. Unethical scientists are kidnapping homeless people and killing them with SCIENCE for SCIENCE. Strange, superpowered villains strike fear and terror into the everyday citizens, who are helpless to resist. The police are unprepared and outgunned. And, probably the most terrifying, the 80's fashion has transformed into early 90's fashion.
Welcome to the world of the 1990 CBS series The Flash. Our story begins on a stormy night when Barry Allen, a forensic scientist with the Central City PD, is involved in a lab accident (that includes lightning and various hazardous chemicals) that bestows superpowers upon him, as one often is. Well, this is an offshoot of the DC Cinematic Universe (as it was in 1990 - Tim Burton's Batman was out, as were the Superman films of the 70's and 80's. And Supergirl.)
But anyway! Barry gains the ability to move faster than the human eye, with matching reaction time and enhanced metabolism (sped-up healing, needs to eat a lot, etc.) And just in time, too - that biker gang I mentioned above is planning its biggest statement yet. And Barry's police officer brother, Jay, is caught in the crossfire.
When Jay dies at the hands of his former partner, the disgraced Pike, Barry vows revenge and teams up with S.T.A.R. Labs scientist Tina McGee to take down the threats to Central City.
The Flash ran for twenty-two episodes during the 1990-1991 TV season, but was ultimately cancelled due to its awful timeslot not allowing it to get the ratings needed to justify a renewal. Even so, it became very popular with DC fans in the ensuing years who praised the special effects and the overall solid writing. It starred John Wesley Shipp as Barry Allen / The Flash, Amanda Pays as Dr. Tina McGee, and Alex Désert as Julio Mendez, Barry's lab partner and close friend. The entire series is available on DVD, and is possibly going to get a reboot thanks to the success of other DC shows such as Smallville and Arrow, perhaps just in time to tie in with the Justice League movie that DC's been promising us since Iron Man came out in 2008. Who knows?
Even so, this is the first time I've ever watched this show all the way through, and I figure I might as well write up my thoughts on the show a lá
cleolinda in her recaps, only less cool and eloquent. So grab your friends, put on your spandex morphsuit thingy, and strap in, 'cuz this is LII WATCHES: The Flash!
