LAst night was pretty rad--Mikey's wine and cheese night. It was another of those where everyone got wasted and Micheal B crashed with us, which to me is the natural thing everybody would do, but is such pulling teeth here, everybody wants to go home and fears to impose. I talked to Jon D like he was a real person, and everybody got into the scene and tried every cheese. The party didn't break up until one or 2, so we slept in then woke up hung over and decided more sleep was a better option. We got past shuffling around about 2? 3? and started cleaning up. Mikey is thinking about lunch now, and I've managed to throw away all the cheese parts and liquor bottles, which are substantial. I think everybody had a good time. We had double breakfast this morning and will watch some black books later, which Mikey quite likes.
J and my last date day (last sat) was a real adventure. We walked all the way from the city to st lucia (where I used to go to uni) on the far side of the river. We walked to West End markets just to feel the vibe and grab some brekkie. And then we thought we'd just toddle along by the river til the next ferry stop. Only problem was the ferry stops were all still washed out from the flooding this Jan. So we walked and walked and eventually you couldn't walk along the river anymore so we turned up into the neighborhoods. And we kept going, because every time we thought we'd reached a dead end, no through road, there was a tiny pathway, which connected you by a series of crooked stone stairs to another tiny no through road. Or a bridge over a rainforest garden. And by the time we seriously looked at the map, we were just across the river from st lucia, so it was easier to go on than go back. We walked across the massive bridge, named for eleanor schonell who also did the UQ theatre.
We'd embarked on this adventure to try to visit a chess exhibition J was keen on. Artists from all over the world designed chess sets. My favourite was the one with Aussie wildlife on one side and normal chrome british pieces on the other. The whole table was astroturfed to look like lawn. It was something out of a fairy tale. There was also an ice kingdom one and a gay picnic one, and one made of gourds with spots and a talking one, that did a conversation as you played. It was a very tactile exhibit, one where you wished all the time you could have a go yourself.
Also featured at the gallery was a street art exhibition, which was pretty cool since we'd just done the Banksi movie recently. This had a lot of local stuff, not a ton of talent but some interesting ideas. And then though we were pretty tired, we thought it most fun to walk to the ferry on the near side of the river which we caught just in time, the whole day we got trains in 30 seconds. We went back to south bank and saw the finches exhibit at the GOMA, they have finches in an environment full of harpischord strings so that whenever the finches land it makes a sound, and so the room is full of the soundscape of their voices and their movement. We took another trip down the giant slide too and then had cake for lunch and then met MIkey for a surprise for him...
Roller derby! added birthday celebrations. Roller derby is a weird combination of classic patriarchical Lingere football league style "girls with their underwear on are totally empowered because they ick ass" exploitation and an actually cool fast moving alternative sport. I tended towards the first part of the feelings for the first half, and the second part for the second half, when the girls were so good you forgot everything else.
I have the rest of 2010 posed in photo form btw.
Many hugs,
M
