Chapter 8:
After telling the girls that they will be back later after a quick change of clothes to take over so that the girls can rest, Yong Hwa and the rest left the hospital. Stepping out, he realises that it is drizzling slightly. He lifted his head to it as if it could help wash away the guilt he felt.
It was because of him that she is laying there. It is also because of him that she has gotten into this accident and lost her memory of him. He should have told her about what happened at the concert instead of having to hear it through Nicole. Smiling bitterly, this must be his own personal punishment by having the girl you love more than life itself forget everything that has to do with you.
“Hyung, come on, let’s go to the car.” Junghsin tells him softly, putting his hand on Yong’s shoulder, leading him towards the direction where the car is parked.
As they made their way back to their dorm, he could not help but think about her. As the car passed the night-lights of Seoul, his thoughts drifted back to when they first met.
They were paired up together for a show. He was really excited since he is a long time fan of her group. He even braved the cold so that he could watch them perform in Busan. However, he had to admit that she was not the one he always noticed. To him, she was the youngest and do not stand out as much as her sisters but it changed the night he met her.
She was a cute bundle of nervous energy that stems from her inexperience with the opposite gender and her well-known innocence. He was amused but more accurately intrigued by her.
“Do you know what is the different between like and love, Yo-ng?” She asked him seriously. It was clear she expected an answer for him.
The question that left him dumbfounded, it was so simple yet profound at the same time. He did not know the answer at that time but he was determined to give her one by the time they end their journey. He guessed that it is her innocence that allowed the firing of questions that were totally out of norm. It left him really curious as to what is going in that head of hers.
They progressed on slowly on the show and just focused on getting used to each other’s presence. It was more for her benefit since she never had a boyfriend before. He was a little sad for her that she experienced all her first under such circumstances and also with a stranger. However, he still could help but relish the fact that it was with him and no one else.
He was extremely patient with her and letting her get use to him. He was really amused that she being so smart and read a lot could have so much trouble expressing herself. It was like watching her learning to talk. He could not help but like her more each time she manages to knock down a few bricks of her wall each time.
He still remembered how hurt she was when he was preparing for his concert and did not found time to contact for a month. The fans dubbed it the famous “mildang” episode but in truth, he only did not call her for a week but he was so tired from his schedule that he did not found the time to call and it stretched on for a month unfortunately.
“I cannot believe you did this just to see if I missed you?! Ah jeongmal! I was really worried about you. You did not even reply my messages let alone the calls. Now I feel like an idiot for braving the anti reports and attending your concert!” She mutters going a mile in a minute with her nose flaring.
“I am really sorry. It was meant to be only a week of no contact but the preparations for the concert left me real exhausted that I forgot to call. It was not a month, Joohyun. I am extremely happy that you came to the concert and I wanted you to attend very much, Hyun..” He apologises desperately.
“I do not even know what to believe anymore. You lost my trust in you and that translate to all your goguma points, Yong Hwa-ssi” She tells him with her nose still flaring and the way she speaks to him so politely that it caused him to flinch in response.
He knew it was uncalled for and any girl will be hurt by his actions. However, seeing her hurt and confused by what he has done, he knew that she felt something for him too and that was his “go ahead” signal that he could take things further with her.
Took things further he did, more initiative of skinships on his part but it is mostly off camera where they will linger after the crew has long gone and just enjoy each other’s company until their time is up. Their house provided a front for the countless times they stayed back to cuddle and talk.
His thoughts drift back to their first kiss when they were in Japan. It was after their heart to heart talk. A portion was for viewers but they talked more in detail when he sneaked back to her room where he finally told her he likes her.
“Seo Joo Hyun, l like you. I know it is only for a show and we are not suppose to develop feelings for each other but I cannot help myself.” He tells her all the while holding her eyes at a steady and unwavering gaze.
“I am starting to like you too, Yong oppa. I am serious when I said that I will slowly break down my walls for you back there.” She tells him with the usual sparkle in her eyes.
He still remembered she was smiling as though she has been waiting for that for the longest time. Leaning over he gently put his lips on hers like it was the most natural thing to do. Pulling back to take a breath, she gently wraps her arms around his neck and putting her head hesitantly at the crook of his neck, making him hug her closer to him.
From then on, things changed between them. They were more open with their affection with each other but carefully keeping it contained so that it will not alert the crew, their managers and also the viewers. It was a private moment that only the both of them knew about.
They did not see the need to define their relationship until they were at the end of their journey where they knew that meeting in secret would be so much harder. They were both just happy to work within between the grey areas of their undefined relationship with just the fact they like each other being the only reason.
However, he wanted something more with her and he was willing to face the risk just to get it. It is only because he has already fallen hard for her and cannot imagine not having her in his life. He was so happy when she felt the same way and decided to be his officially.
“I spent the month thinking about us carefully, I want to take a chance with you, Yong oppa. I come to realize that I love you too. The one-month period was torture, I realised that I felt so empty without you. I missed you terribly.”
It was the answer he was waiting for. True to form, his Hyunnie is the ever logical one, never going just base on instincts or gut feeling alone. Everything needs to be thought out carefully. She is never one to leap before she looks.
Things became better after that. She was more affectionate and caring towards him, his health and also his members. She constantly tries to be more expressive but apparently it still needs work judging by the event that happened just this evening.
Yong Hwa pulls his thoughts away Hyun for a moment when he sees that they have reach their apartment building. They reached the darkened dorm unit. Yong Hwa and Jonghyun being the oldest had first dibs to the bathroom. Coming out to the living room 15 minutes later freshly showered and refreshed, he sat on the couch and waited for the boys to get ready and his thoughts still tuned to Hyunnie.
“Yoona tells me that Seohyun was uncomfortable ever since the first article about you and Hara when we attended the variety show recording came out. Being Seohyun, she kept that in and did not talk about it after you explained it to her but the girls could tell that it affected her a little.” Jonghyun suddenly speaks as he sat down beside Yong Hwa in the dark.
Hearing that, he felt 10 times worse, berating himself why he did not pick it up whenever they met given whatever little time that they shared. She always looks so cheerful to see him but thinking carefully, there were times when he sees her looking troubled but she ends up telling him it was nothing and he was naive as to leave it at that.
“She talks to Nicole often who tries to reassure her that Hara is just nursing a harmless crush and it should be nothing to worry about. I would think being girl she couldn’t help but be troubled. Most importantly, she chose to trust you and that is what matters, Hyung.”
“Why did she not talk to me about this? I am her boyfriend and she should come to me with her worries,” He mutters dejectedly.
“She does not want to worry you since we were busy with our schedules. Think of this as another way to start over. The right way, without the cameras, re-doing all her first all over and truly experience falling in love again without the whole world watching. It is not all bad if you look at this at another angle.” Jonghyun tell him sagely.
“I guess you may be right. It is true if you look at it at another angle. So you and Yoona huh? Since when?” He comments, finally able to manage a smile after tonight’s chain of events. It may not be such a bad idea to think of it as a second chance to begin with her like how it should be properly done.
“Well, it is still in beginning stages. We are talking a lot more than usual but we are taking it slow. I think there is potential there.” Jonghyun answers shyly.
“So what did we miss? I swear I heard you both talking.” Jungshin says when he switches on the lights before joining the guys on the floor beside their couch.
“Nothing important, I was telling Yong Hwa hyung that it is all not as bleak as it looks. There is still a silver lining of sorts in this little situation.” Jonghyun answers with a shrug.
“I agree with Jongie hyung. You and Seohyun’s dandelion has just weathered a major wind blow which uprooted it a little but not all. Now you just need to anchor it back onto the ground firmly and just watch over it more closely. I am sure it will be fine, Hyung.” Minhuyk adds borrowing the dandelion analogy that Hyun use to explain her understanding to like and love when they ended their journey.
“Thanks guys, I feel better already. Honest. Now since every one is refreshed let’s head back to the hospital and enough of the serious talk. You guys are starting to scare me since all of you are beginning to sound like my mum.” Yong Hwa tells his brothers and throwing in the last line in his attempt at a joke.
Finally able to laugh, Yong and his brothers once again leave their dorm and head back to the hospital to watch over his Hyunnie.
