Well, my portuguese isn't in the best shape (heritage speaker of european portuguese) but the use of "for" doesn't strike me as odd. That's what I would use too if I was speaking about a totally irrealist hypothesis.

so when you use the future subjunctive in this way, you use "ir+infinitive" instead of the -ria conditional? thanks so much!

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the subjunctive, so I'm just going to elaborate a little on what was said above. Here's another example:

Se você for menor de idade, não poderá comprar cigarros no Brasil. = If you are underage, you won't be able to buy cigarrettes in Brazil.

Se você fosse menor de idade, não poderia comprar cigarros no Brasil. = If you were underage, you wouldn't be able to buy cigarrettes in Brazil

valeu !!!!!! i've learned portuguese in kind of a roundabout way, since i already spoke french and spanish. i basically have read a bit of grammar rules and then try to extrapolate everything from listening/reading/etc. and so sometimes things aren't fully clear to me.
