Though then the rest doesn't make sense (the "und Beeinflussungen" is kind of left hanging in the air syntactically), so maybe "nach" is not "according to, following" but "after": "the humanities of the 19th century confined themselves to finding that after history-of-development principles and influences, things only happened after each other [rather than with each other?]".
But I find the whole sentence extremely confusing. As if somebody is trying to sound too clever for their own good.
