I've often heard that, too. I think the advantage with PA over Pennsylvania is that it's two syllables over five; there aren't many states with such a ratio. (California and North/South Carolina match it, though. Do people from those states use the postal abbreviations?)
on a related note, I'm not sure whether I pronounce Philadelphia with four syllables or five, and now that I'm thinking about it I realize I could go either way. actually, I think I usually just call it "Philly", which is two syllables -- hmm, I wonder, what other cities can have their names shortened this way?

Some folks trying to talk trendy say "Cali" for "California," but I don't often hear it outside of that, and it's not common.
