I've often heard that, too. I think the advantage with PA over Pennsylvania is that it's two syllables over five; there aren't many states with such a ratio. (California and North/South Carolina match it, though. Do people from those states use the postal abbreviations?)

No. :)

Some folks trying to talk trendy say "Cali" for "California," but I don't often hear it outside of that, and it's not common.

(I meant to say, people do that in Philly too.)

Nope, at least I've never heard anyone say "C-A". We (the people I'm around at least) say "Cali" and "So Cal" though; oh yes, and "Nor Cal".

For most Californians, calling it "Cali" is nigh unto blasphemy.

Haha, well, I've lived here for my entire 18 years, so maybe my friends and I are just special.

Maine would actually get longer if you said M-E.

Maine: The only state with a "Whose house?" cheer.

You pronounce Pennsylvania (and California) with five syllables?

Yes. Pen-syl-vay-nee-a. Blame it on being English, or something.

(Actually I usually pronounce it "peeyay", but you knew that.)

damn, that just sounds wrong.

on a related note, I'm not sure whether I pronounce Philadelphia with four syllables or five, and now that I'm thinking about it I realize I could go either way. actually, I think I usually just call it "Philly", which is two syllables -- hmm, I wonder, what other cities can have their names shortened this way?

So wait, how do you pronounce it? With just a "nyah" at the end so you elide (?) the last two syllables?

Yeah, I say "Penn-syl-vay-nyah" and "Cal-i-for-nyah," both.

Yep, nyah nyah!
