Update on Westercon

Phoenix was hot! (Well, duh.) The Mission Palms Hotel in Tempe (site of a recent Nebula Conference) has a very lovely pool, and that helped even though the mercury was already soaring by 7 am. The convention newsletter reported an attendance of more than 650, which is pretty consistent with Westercons of the past decade and I think larger than the previous Phoenix Westercon. We'll see if the next two Westercons, which will be returning to the convention's historical LA-Bay Area homeland, will be any larger.

Hmm. It certainly didn't seem like 650 people. I wonder if they were counting no-shows? (My own daughter was one of those.) Even so, I remember the good old days of Westercons, when there were a thousand or more attending.

The words in the newsletter were "bodies on site." I do not know their counting methodology nor how they counted everything. I am merely retyping the words printed in the convention newsletter.

Oh, I understand! Nor should my slightly prickly reply be taken personally. I just had people at the con itself assuming that "If Kevin says it, he must be standing behind it," which isn't necessarily so. (Such as my reporting the TwoferCon bid for Pasadena NASFiC in 2010.)

Sometimes I wonder if I might have too much credibility. :)
