"Herald to the High King"
Indian ink and watercolours
Detail view of the pennant. Elrond, before being Lord of Imladris and dealing with Hobbits, Dwarves and Wizards (and that troublesome One Ring business), was the Herald of Ereinion Gil-galad, last High King of the Noldor. Somewhere deep down in my brain, there are still remnants of knowledge about a ton of other titles he had, and things he did before retiring to the valley of Imladris after the Battle of the Last Alliance... I confess my motives for painting this were rather shallow, since I just thought he might look rather stunning in full Herald regalia, astride a horse. Not about to go into battle, mind you - that would require a helmet, and more armour for both horse and rider. Let's just say he rides out before the King to receive a delegation from another realm, okay? ;)
Artist's notes:Another painting for which I had the outlines on watercolour paper for a long time before deciding to fill in the colour. All the details on the armour and pennant had to be carefully outlined in thin pencil lines because there was no way I could ink them. The result was that I had to spend hours with a very tiny brush tip filling in all the gaps between those curls and stars and lines which had to remain white...
(I've since discovered masking fluid in small bottles that can be applied with a needle to protect fine lines from being painted over ~ but that is an art geek's squee for another day. ^_~ )
