"Little Lieutenant"
Sepia-coloured Indian ink pen, grey and black Indian ink
and opaque white drawing ink on rough brown paper
The same picture, scanned in black and white...
Initially planned to be nothing more than a few quick scribbles to test both the paper and the various pens, nibs and inks I have lying around and trying to determine which would suit me best to illustrate the upcoming book of
emmacollingwood ~ this once again turned out to have a life of its own. Muses will be muses...
Oddly enough, I wasn't really aware what I was doing until the brown outlines stared back at me - and by then Lt. Groves had firmly assumed command of the remaining art supplies and demanded to be properly coloured and shaded. And since I usually neglect him, it was the least I could do to make amends.
... so here he is, cheeky little thing.
I think I still need to fiddle a bit with the pens and nibs, though - the lines here are too thick in this for the intended purpose, as the high-resolution scans for the printing of the illustrations will allow us to reproduce the illustrations in their original size. That means I need finer lines and softer tones of shading - and match it all to the illustrations of "Samuel Blackwood", as this will be the second book in the series...
I'm very much looking forward to it all, and fully intend to have a good productive weekend!
