Place: Mediterranean Sea
Reason # 864 why I love Italy: The beaches. They are absolutely gorgeous. We have driven down to Sorrento this afternoon to spend the night and have a few hour to relax on the beach. It feels so great to be back out in the sun again after almost a month of Alaska and Northern Europe. I'm trying very hard not to take a million and one pictures.
My first few of the Mediterranean Sea
Funny Italian boys who posed when they saw us taking pictures from the bus. Oh those Italianos.
"I wore an itsy bitsy teeny weeny black-and-white polka dot bikini, that I wore in the Mediterranean Sea today..." It kinda works.
Our bus driver, Antonio. Seriously, these Italianos are freaking awesome.
Pompeii was very interesting this afternoon, though walking down the ancient roads of the city proved to be another challenge. It was almost worse than the Roman Road to the Forum. So while I wanted to look up and around as I walked down the huge stoned streets, I had to watch my feet instead so I would trip and die. But it was so intriguing to see an authentic look at the ancient civilization.
Mt Vesuvius, which erupted in 79 A.D. and destroyed Pompeii. It took 4 days to finish erupting.
This was our guide, and he had a Louis Vuitton man purse. So guess what Rickey's getting for Christmas!! (It'll be a rip-off version of course).
A real body excavated from the ruins of Pompeii, preserved in plaster. CREEPY. But really freaking cool.
This was an old gladiator training place. It was like the second most popular one after Capua. (ATRETES!)
Also interesting: the large number of brothels in ancient Pompeii. It was one big purchased orgy waiting to happen. And the souvenir shops reflected this. Not a place to bring Barb shopping, no. I didn't take pictures, because she would have killed me.
Three more days till our trip is over. I'm very much looking forward to not living out of suitcase anymore.
