I thought I would check in :)
Since my auntie J passed I've had a hard time. Not inasmuch as because of the loss of a family member whom I've known all my life, but also someone who was my friend.
Last year I was researching my maternal line. In the search I found one of our lines came from Normandy. When I found that Auntie J was visiting Northern France I was able to share that with her. She was so joyous! She was able to find her French roots that she knew was a part of her. When she came back, she brought me a book about Northern France as a gift. I will treasure it always.
Another gift from her came from Mexico. See, I took care of her wee farm when she was gone. Caring for goats, feeding cats, watering her garden. This trip she brought back a pair of maracas. She had them engraved with the word "amiga." I loved that so much, to know we were more than aunt and niece, but also friends.
While in her house I noticed some similarities. She collected quotes to tape to her refrigerator and had little stashes of shells, rocks or other pieces of nature around her house. I also collect quotes and things of nature. We got that habit from her father, my beloved Cowpa.
In the past few years she would give us milk from her goats, so we saw each other at least every other week. She started hugging mom and I when she left and saying "I love you." Because of this I know the last thing we said to each other was "I love you."
