Scroll spelled to the desk of Minerva McGonagall

Oh come now Minerva, I hardly think punishment is in order. The girls bent a few rules, yes, but they're hardly the first students to have done so! It's natural for students to be curious about such things, especially such bright young minds in need of a challenge! And after all, Minerva, after all-- they showed a great deal of remorse, very concerned for their friend, and I hardly think it's necessary to pile any more stress upon our little Seer given her delicate present condition. It's rather imperative that a means be found to control these visions of hers before-- well, I'm sure you're familiar with the history!

I am curious, Minerva, I hope you will forgive me for asking, but how do you explain the fact that Severus Snape was administering an extremely powerful poison to Albus under the guise of a medicinal tonic? Now you and I both know that Severus was not a stupid man, I hardly think it's plausible to hypothesize that he wasn't aware-- especially when there's no one else in this castle, or indeed in this country who could have correctly concocted such an intricate combination of venom and spellwork. There was nothing benign about that draught, Ms McGonagall! Its intent was to destroy our dear Headmaster, siphoning his strength by increments, and it very nearly accomplished its dark purpose in full. Now I know that having worked so long with the man, it's natural to have fostered a certain amount of loyalty towards Severus, but you mustn't blind yourself to the evidence! If you have an explanation that better suits the evidence in hand, I would be delighted to hear it.

Sincerely,

Horace E. F. Slughorn
