"What book do you frequently recommend?"
I find myself recommending 3 books most often at parties, or rather 3 trilogies.
Elizabeth Bear's Hammered / Scardown / Worldwired
Near-future SF featuring a grumpy, middle-aged disabled female veteran of color, AI, aliens, ecological disasters, Canada vs. China as the world superpowers, and some truly neat ideas, plus twisty plotting involving political intrigue and dysfunctional family dynamics. So good, and fun to read, too! I even converted a friend of mine who doesn't usually like sci-fi and reads paranormal romance.
Octavia Butler's Dawn / Adulthood Rites/ Imago, often sold as an omnibus called Lilith's Brood or Xenogenesis
Post-apocalyptic SF involving poly, genetic engineering, ecology, gender issues, biracial children, aliens and again, a strong female lead character.
Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Dart / Chosen / Avatar
Fantasy with an original mythology, a culture in which sexuality, kink and courtesans are celebrated, twisty political plotting, hot sex, and again, a strong female lead, a *submissive, masochistic* heroine, at that.
Seeing common themes here?
And what the heck, now that you know my literary kinks, rec me a book or 3!
You can still ask me a question.
