chapter 22
It was cold, so damn cold! She was freezing like crazy, yet she was walking aimlessly through the streets of Seoul. Looking up at the grey sky the rain fell on her face. The wind was blowing strongly, making it all the more uncomfortable to walk down the streets. She wrapped her thin trench coat around her to skinny body. Lately she didn't sleep and eat well, looking more like a walking corpse than a woman in her best age. Why didn't she choose a thicker jacket? There were better ways to die than freezing to death! Then why wouldn't she go home instead?
"Cause only a lonely home is waiting for me!" she answered her own thoughts, "Isn't it sad that I have to talk to myself?" She sighed sadly. Looking around everyone was hurrying down the streets with their umbrella, avoiding the rain that got heavier with very passing minute. Chae Won of course didn't have one. She could feel how the rain was soaking through her clothes, meeting her skin and making the freezing even worse.
A food tent arrived in front of her so she decided to enter it to get out of the rain. Her tight schedule didn't allow her to get sick. It was also her job that kept her sane. Being sick would make her feel her loneliness only more. At least it was quite warm in the tent. She took her soaked coat off. The ahjumma of the tent offered her some paper tissues to wipe the rain from her face. Bowing she thanked her.
"Ahjumma, give me a bottle of soju and a bibimbap, please" she ordered after she sat down. Due to the weather the tent was nearly empty. Only a couple was sitting three tables behind her with the man showing his back towards her and another old ahjussi on another table. Her stomach growled signaling her that she only ate an apple the whole day. Slowly she poured the soju in the small cup that the ahjumma had brought her in the meantime. With one shot she gulped the alcohol down her throat. The strength of the drink made her tear up, slowly she breathed out. Her burning throat proved her that she was still alive. Quickly she took another shot. Soon she could feel the impact of the alcohol. It was not good to have such a strong drink on an empty stomach. After the third shot she stopped cause she already felt slightly dizzy. It was better to wait for the food first.
Suddenly a commotion happened behind her on the table where the couple sat.
"Please, oppa! Don't drink anymore, you're already drunk!" the girl asked of her friend.
Hearing them Chae Won somehow felt nostalgic. In the past she had been spending so much time with Joong Ki at a place like this. Being in her thoughts she didn't catch the answer of the guy. Again the girl asked him not to drink too much. "Leave me alone! If you don't want to drink with me just go home!" he answered coldly. Her heart skipped a beat when she recognized the voice of the man. It was Joong Ki! Oh no, ottoke? She didn't want to meet him and his new girl!
"Stay calm, Chae Won! He didn't notice you when you entered the tent so if you leave it quietly again everything is fine! I guess he is too drunk anyway," she calmed herself down. She was about to get up when the ahjumma arrived with her bibimbap. First she just wanted to pay and leave but the smell of the food reminded her that she haven't eaten the whole day. Besides, her dizzyness told her to fill her stomach at least a little. She decided to have some bites though the thought of him and his girl took her appetite away. Why the hell did she have to meet him? Anyone but him! She thanked the ahjumma and started to eat but somehow the food tasted like sawdust instead.
Chae Won could hear how the girl stood up and walked to his side. Sitting down next to him she gave him a peck while still persuading him to leave. However Soong Ki refused. Chae Won gave up eating. She waved for the tent owner to pay. Afterwards she slowly got up with an ear towards the couple that was still bickering while fishing for her trench coat. The ahjumma came back with the change. Right the moment she turned around to leave she ran into the girl.
Excusing she wanted to leave quickly when his drunken voice stopped her, "Moonie, is that you?"
Before she could answer he had already wrapped his arms around and hugged her. Feeling his embrace after such a long time she clenched her teeth not to cry. She couldn't blame his action in his drunken condition, right? Chae Won knew he wouldn't do this when he was sober. When he released her again she forcefully put a straight face on. Nonetheless he was with another woman. She wouldn't disgrace herself in front of them. Politely she smiled at the other girl.
Seeing the sour face of his girl Joong Ki giggled, "No need to be jealous! She's my dongseng Chae Won. We haven't met for a while, right sis? This is my friend Eun Shi."
"Sister? You never told me you had one," Eun Shi replied, still suspicious of his behavior.
"We're not close enough to tell you all family secrets!" he only answered. Chae Won struggled to get free from his arm that he had put on her shoulders. Afterwards she quickly made a step away from him.
"We're only half-siblings," she answered on his behalf.
"Why don't we sit together and we have some drinks like we did in the past?" he suggested instead, "Eun Shi is a party pooper! She kept telling me to go home. She should know by now how much I can take in."
Chae Won shook her head, saying that she was in a hurry and had to leave now. She was desperate to leave as fast as possible! Spending more time with these two? No way! She was not that insane to see them together! She'd rather spent two weeks alone than two hours with them! When she was already ready to leave she heard his words behind her, saying calmly without even a little trace of drunkenness, "Are you happy now, Moonie? Is this what you wanted? Was it worth giving up our happiness?"
His very word was a stab in her heart. Biting her lips she took a deep breath before she turned to him. He was standing half a step closer to her than his girl, who was ponding about his strange words. Chae Won was sure she would ask him later. She was also sure that Joong Ki would only give her a vague answer. Only she could see his painful eyes that were telling her his true condition. She wanted to say so much but all she said was, "Mianhe!" instead.
"Yes, I'm also sorry!" he answered sadly, then he forced a playful smile on his face again, "Well, time heals everything! Eun Shi, you know what? I don't feel like going home! Let's go clubbing instead!" Ignoring her protest he dragged her out of the tent and down the street. Somehow Chae Won knew tonight would be the last night with Eun Shi, though she didn't know why she felt like this.
"Was it really worth giving up our happiness?" her heart asked her while she looked after the couple. However, was the answer not obvious? Was there even a "right" or "wrong" in this case? Would it be right then to follow her heart while ignoring the laws of the nature? She sighed again. Luckily the rain nearly stopped it was only misty. Wrapping her trench coat tighter around her she rushed home. The silence was welcoming her when she opened the door. At least it was warm inside. Chae Won was looking forward to get out of her damp clothes and have a warm shower.
She was about to get in ther apartment when suddenly someone put a hand on her shoulders. Chae Won wanted to turn around when the voice made her freeze.
"You didn't give me the answer yet, Moonie! So tell me, was it worth giving up our happiness?" Joong Ki wanted to know. How come he was here? Didn't he say he would go clubbing with his girl? Since when was he back from Japan anyway?
"Do you really have to have the answer? I think you know the answer only too well!" she answered exhaustedly.
"And do you know that the answer to this question is the reason for me to go on?" he replied calmly.
When she was about to turn around to him he wrapped both arms around her to a tight back hug.
"No matter how often you will push me away, I will get up again and never let you forget our love!" he stated.
She was trying to get out of his embrace, but to no avail. It only made her more aware of the physical closeness to him.
"Chaebal, oppa! Don't do this to us!" she begged him.
"I'm sorry, Moonie! I can't!" he only whispered...
