Chapter 21
Chae Won was desperate. She was sitting in a treatment room at the hospital and the nurse was taking care of her injuries. However, more than anything else she wanted to go looking for Soong Ki. They got separated once they were brought to the hospital. They immediately took him to the surgery while holding her back from following him, urging that she needed treatment herself. So she reluctantly sat down on the wheelchair that was already waiting for her.
She begged the nurse to hurry with her treatment and take her to him as fast as possible. Seeing her worried face and the tearful eyes the nurse nodded. The moment she arrived in front of the surgery a doc came out and asked if she was his guardian. Chae Won confirmed it.
“We have a little problem with him right now. Actually his injuries are not that serious but he lost a lot of blood. Unfortunately Mr. Song has a rare blood type and only this morning we had a multiple crash on the interstate with lots of badly injured patients causing us to run short on blood preservations. Right now we still have a bottle left but are afraid it won't go far so do you know someone who has his blood type? It's O-," the doc told her.
Chea Won looked at him and asked him to repeat his words and to speak slower as well because her mind couldn't translate his words that fast. Especially with all the medical terms it was hard for her to understand him. Seeing her overwhelmed face he smiled and took the time to explain it to her. This time he also used the help of his hands and gestures, so finally she could understand him.
Moonie looked at the doc. Why didn't she have the same blood type like him? She told the doc that she couldn't donate blood. He only grinned and looked at her, saying calmly, "Even if you would have the same blood type and even if you would like to, we would have to turn your offer down. Why? Cause look at yourself! You're injured yourself und you were bleeding as well! All the blood that you have, I think, no, I know, that your body needs it itself. That's not the reason why I asked you but because I was hoping that you might know somebody else who could donate. Usually friends or family members are more willing to do it in such a situation."
"I'm only a visitor, spending my weekend here. I usually live in Korea, so the circle of person I know here are really small," she answered him. At that moment her parents popped in her mind and she decided to call her mother. With trembling hands she tooks the phone out of her pocket.
"Mom, it's me, I'm sorry that I have to butt in your meeting but this is really an emergency call! I've been in an accident half an hour ago," she told her mother the moment she picked up her phone and continued, "I'm in the hospital right now. No, no, no, don't worry besides from a minor injury I'm fine, so you really don't have to worry! That's not the reason why I called you. We have a problem and you or dad might be able to help. Joong Ki is a lot more injured than me and he lost a lot of blood. To make it short we need a donator!" Her mom asked her what blood type they needed and agreed to come immediately and asked her to tell the doc to prepare everything she'd be there in half an hour. After Chae Won told her mother the name of the hospital her mom hung up.
The moment her mother arrived she took Chae Won in a tight embrace while still being aware of her injuries. After her mother released her she stroke her face tenderly. Moonie was glad that her mother was by her side. It felt less lonely. Before she could say something her mother was already looking around for the doc and nurse, saying "Where are they? I want to donate as fast as possible. Oh, my poor son!"
"Son? Did she just say son?" Moonie thought and looked surprised at her mother who was still looking for the nurse.
"Mom? Did you just call oppa 'son'?" she couldn't help but ask.
"Oh, did I say that?" her mother wondered, " It must be because I...always saw in him my future son-in-law."
At that moment the nurse finally arrived and she immediately rushed with her to the treatment room, leaving Chae Won behind. While thinking of it, she never saw her mother this anxious before. She was a rather calm and controlled person. First she wanted to follow her mother but then she decided to stay in the waiting room just in case the doc might come back.
The time didn't seem to past. Minutes felt like hours. Everytime she looked at the clock it was just minutes ago.
It was only two hours later that the doc came out of the surgery. Chae Won immmediately rushed to him.
"He's fine now, also thanks to the blood donation, and is lying in the recovery room. A nurse will bring you to him," he said.
"Is he really okay now, doc? You have to tell me the truth! We would do everything for my flesh and blood!" her mother urged.
Chea Won was too relieved to pay attention to anything else. She only thanked him with a trembling voice and turned to her mother to go with her to Joong Ki.
"You go first, dear. I will call your dad and tell him the good news. I'll follow later," her mother answered instead.
Chae Won looked gratefully at her mother, knowing that she wanted to give her some minutes alone with him.
The moment she entered the room and saw him in the bed, still unconscious and his left leg and arm put in cast, a bandage around his head, she teared up at once. Why must it had to be him? Didn't he have enough hardships in live already? With the help of the nurse she carefully neared his bed, placing her wheelchair next to him. The nurse told her that later he would be moved to another room and to call her if she would need any help. After Moonie thanked her she left the room.
She took his right hand gently in hers. Lowering her head she carefully placed a kiss on the back of his hand. She didn't dare to touch his face. He looked so pale and fragile. The accident made her aware how precious life was and how fast it could be gone. In one moment they were cycling happily together only to be nearly dead the next.
"Sweetie, I just talked another time with the doc and he said that after some recovery time Song Ki should be without any subsequent damages. The most dangerous injury was the bleeding but they could remedy it," her mother told her after she also entered.
"Thank you, mom. I'm glad that he'll be fine though I can't hardly picture it right now," she replied.
"Oh, by the way I also asked them to give you a room together with Soong Ki later. I know otherwise you wouldn't rest at all. Nonetheless you are injured as well. So you can keep in eye on him while getting some rest as well," her mom added.
"Mom, what can I say? You know me only too well," she smiled shakily.
"Give me his adress and the name of your hotel and both of your keys. I will go and get some personal stuff for you two," she offered. Again Chae Won had to smile gratefully at her mother. She pointed at the backpack that was hanging on the grip of the wheelchair.
"You're the best, mom!" she praised.
"If there is something that I'm good at after all these years with your father then it should be organizing. Are you sure you don't want to rest yourself, hun? He will need some more time to regain consciousness anyway. And to tell you the truth you don't look good yourself," her mother replied. However, Chae Won assured her that she was fine now that she saw him and will rest later.
Shortly after her mother left Chae Won slowly got up from her wheelchair. Looking down at the still sleeping man she smiled sadly.
"I'm sorry, oppa, but even if I want to I can't stay away from you. My heart won't let me choose. It doesn't care for what's right or wrong. All it knows is you. Even if I have to got to hell for loving you, a love that might be forbidden, not only once but no matter how often I would go willingly, I still would give in to my love for you." she thought, "All the wrongdoings can't keep my heart from loving you. Ottoke?"
Slowly she wiped her tears away, "However, can I really ruin your life, too? Do we really have to have the results of a test, if the facts are obvious? Can we really keep distance if we stay together? How can I withstand not to touch you, to feel you, if the longing is like a knife in my heart? I'm sorry, but I simply can't resist my love for you so I can't stay by your side. If I would stay now I would never be able to part from you anymore."
"If I would stay now I would never be able to part from you anymore," she repeated her own thought with a fading voice. Biting her lips she looked at his calm face. Would it be the last time to see him? Inch by inch she neared his lips. A second before her lips would meet his she hesitated. Closing her eyes she tried to stop more tears from welling up, in vain.
"Only one last kiss!" she gave in and put her slightly opened lips in slow motion on his, feeling with every passing second more of his soft and yet firm lip structure. Her heart beat like as if it would jump out of her chest soon, telling her endlessly to stay by his side. Chae Won clenched her fists and forced herself to raise from her position. With her right hand she stroke his face another time before she sat down back on her wheelchair.
"Moonie?" a weak voice stopped her when she was nearly at the door,
"Do you really plan to leave me like this?" he asked with a voice covered with endless pain.
She gulped. Why did he have to wake up right at this moment?
"I have to," she answered calmly. She was still avoiding his gaze, knowing she couldn't handle his hurt.
"Why? Chaebal, at least tell me why!" he begged, "What made you change your mind that you wouldn't even await the DNA test? Don't you think I have the right to know when you are willingly throwing our happiness out of the window?"
"Let's just say that my guts are telling me that you are related to me," somehow she couldn't speak out the word 'brother'.
"Don't you think you are too cruel to go right at this moment, knowing that I can't hold you back?" he asked.
"I have to go now because I know I couldn't if you would hold me back!" she whispered and quickly wiped her tears away. She didn't want to cry. It would only make it harder for both of them.
"What if I threaten that I don't have a reason to live anymore once you stepped out of this room?" he wanted to know calmly. It was this calmness that scared her the most. It proved the seriousness of his words.
"Please, don't say something like this!" she'd instinctively turned to him.
"I'm only asking for one favor: Let's do this damn test! If it turns out that your guts were right I will let you go immediately!" he promised.
She was still hesitating cause she could already feel how her determination decreased with every word and second she spent with him. It was not only a fight against him but also against herself. Would she be able to turn away another time from him?
