Chapter 5
Another week later.
Maru was sitting in his living room. It was already late. His TV was running but he didn't pay attention to it as his mind was occupied with something else. Or rather someone else. A beautiful lady that kept haunting him in his mind; day and night, during the most unfitting moments and yet impossible for him to control. He knew that he was sending mixed signs to her and thus irritating her.
He had to admit that he was confused himself. Maru was pretty sure of his feelings for her. These two weeks had proven him his truthful heart towards her. The happiness everytime he was next to her was real. Still, there was a shadow in his heart that kept him from approaching her. A voice in his head kept telling him that there was a story unfinished. At nights dreams were following him, nightmare-like.
It was nearly the same dream every night. He was sick and stabbed, lying nearly dead on the cold floor. A woman whose face he couldn't see clearly tried to reach for him and he for her. She cried and so did he. Everytime their hands nearly touched another woman appeared and pulled her from the other side away from him. The more they tried to reach for each other the stronger the other one got and the more cruel her laughter sounded. Lastly both women disappeared leaving him desperately behind.
And everytime he would wake up bathed in cold sweat.
And everytime he wondered what the meaning of this dream was?
Did it even have a meaning? But why else would it come back to him nearly every night?
Somehow he knew as long as this dream's meaning was not solved he would be too bothered to start a new relationship. It's as if the woman called him not to forget her and deep down inside he knew she was related to his dark past, literally. If only he could remember who she was. Last week he even bothered to call his sister and asked her if she really told him everyone he knew. She did.
So, though he yearned for Eun Gi, he was afraid to have a past with another woman whose ties weren't cut yet and maybe he didn't tell his sister or Jae Gil of that woman? Standing up from the couch he cursed his brain again. Slowly he walked towards the windows und looked out at the dark night. He took a deep breath and sighed. Why was his life always that complicated? His only wish was to have a common relationship like every one else, too.
There was a woman waiting for him outside whose fond looks told him that she most likely liked him, too. However instead of taking her in a tender embrace he was trapped in a nightmare!
The memories of last week hit him. Again he was glad that he could hide his feelings so well. He was sure Eun Gi didn’t notice his inner turmoil when he helped her in the chair. It started so innocently. Seeing her disorientated face he really was only worried about her and wanted to help her.
However the moment her sweet scent reached his nose when he bent down a shiver ran down his spine. His glance accidentally fell on her cleavage and his heart started a marathon that made it difficult for him to breath. Quickly he turned around mumbling something about getting her a water to hide his true feelings. A man could not always hide his current physical condition.
He already made some steps away from her when he heard a soft moaning. It was not a moaning, was it? He was sure that only his overactive fantasy projected it on her. Turning around her feverish face made him forgot his own condition. But he would lie if he would say that he solely felt as a doctor when he touched her temple. It tickled in his palms and the man in him enjoyed the touch immensely.
He couldn’t tell why he dared to touch her face but when she said she was tired he just wanted to protect her from everything evil in this world. Feeling her soft skin under his hand it took him some strength not to bend down and place a kiss on her shining lips. He had tasted her lip-gloss already so how much sweeter would her lips be?
"Maru, stop it! It’s not the time for such thoughts right now!” he scolded himself and gave his best to concentrate on her again.
His stomach growled bringing him back to the reality and reminding him that he forgot to eat again. This afternoon Eun Gi even sent a little girl with a note and some sandwiches to ask him to eat. However he was too
busy
to eat more than two bites. Then it returned to his mind that he picked up a package from Choco just today after work. Maybe she put something to eat inside? Where did he left it when he came home? Right, it's in the kitchen.
Sitting down on his kitchen table he looked at the package. What could it be? Choco didn't mention anything during their last call and usually she would always tell him everything in advance. Maru got curious. Her behavior was uncommon. But maybe she was only worried because he told her how much work he had everyday? So she wanted to cheer him up with some deliciuos
food
? He smiled fondly. Ever since she became a mother she behaved more like an older sister, always trying to spoil her brother as well.
Opening the package he found a red envelope above some sheets of old newspaper first. His name and the sentence "please, read it first!" was written with Choco's handwriting on it. What could she have written to him? Curiously he opened it.
"Oppa,
I hope, you really read it first cause I have something very important to say before you look at what I've sent to you. And please don't be mad at us after reading it. Be ensured that we did what we thought was best for you. But after your questions last time I knew it was time to give you this. You are right, there was a woman in your past who meant alot to you. Then where is she, you want know? Well, the answer lies within this package. If you are both meant for each other, I'm sure you will remember her or at least find her again. Just let me say: last time you waited for her but she waited even longer for you because she wanted you to fullfill your own dreams first. Don't you think that a woman like her deserves to be loved for the rest of her life at least if not even beyond? We do! Love, Choco."
With every word he read his heart beat faster. So his feelings were not fooling him! There was really a woman from his past! He reread the letter again too shaken to take in everything at once. She waited for him because he wanted him to fulfill his dreams first? Did he read right? His eyes slowly filled with tears because he could feel her love in this simple sentence. Never in his life did he get a bigger gift!
Hesitantly he put the letter on the table. He couldn't say why but he was afraid to find out what was inside. What if he would never remember or find her? What if he couldn't meet this expectation and disappointed her and anyone else? He reached out for the old newspaper but stopped halfway. Unable to remain seated he jumped up from his chair.
"My happiness lies within this box." he mumbled unbelievingly and ran his fingers through his hair. He felt like a fool for not been able to open it immediately. "Stop being a paboo!" he encouraged himself. His hand trembled when he took out the papers. Inside was a white box. Carefully he took the box with both of his hands out and put the letter on top of it.
He carried it in his living room and sat down on his couch again. His knees were shaky and he was afraid that he would lose his balance soon. Closing his eyes he took a deep breath. Suddenly out of nowhere Eun Gi's face popped in his mind again. His hand that was about to open the box stopped in motion. What should he do if he opens this box and remembers her but his love was gone and she waited for him in vain because another woman has caught his heart in between? So was Eun Gi the second woman in his dream who kept him from reuniting with his past love? Could he start a new relationship with this guilt?
Desperately he leaned back at his couch and put both of his hands on his face. Ottoke??? He wished to start a new peaceful life but his past was still haunting him. He never felt so torn before. Sighing he gave up his resistance. It had no use to run away from his destiny. Whatever might be in the box and whereever his path might take him he would accept it. Shouldn't he know from his past that fate was inevitable?
Taking a last deep breath he opened the box only to find more layers of old newspapers. Was Choco playing a game with him? Was another box awaiting him? And really, another small red box was in it. Mysteriously his heart started to beat faster. Did it recognize it? His whole body started to tremble and his eyes slowly filled with tears. Without opening it he suddenly knew the content. The picture was so clear as if he just bought it yesterday.
Maru bits his lips to prevent himself from crying out loud. Choco was right, he would spend the rest of his life to show her how much she meant to him.
"Saranghae, Eun Gi-aah!" he whispered while looking at the rings and planned to say it to her till she was tired of it.
