Looks Like a Solo Tonight (aka Kurt's Party)

Apr 07, 2011 23:39

Given that Kate and Kurt had a small army working under them (most of Kurt's associates combined with the large coterie of teens Kate was able to round up), one would think that everything would have been finished long before the party started. And it was. Technically. Kate just wasn't going to leave anything to chance. Tonight was too important on ( Read more... )

The party was an unexpected impromptu gig, set up by the same mischievous children that made it possible for Kurt to get to get to this point. A few of his wonderful assistants had come into town to help with Courage, and he managed to rope them into helping Kate and Demitri set up with the others. There had to be a hint of magic to this whole ordeal - Kate somehow fulfilled every one of his ridiculous requests in the decorations and catering; friends and family, and the friends that were more akin to family than anything else somehow made it to their humble house; and perhaps the most magical of all, Kurt was happy.

He'd been happy for years, with raising his son and fashioning clothes for Blackbird, but at that moment in time, on an inconsequential Saturday in an inconsequential year, Kurt was really and truly happy. Relinquished of his married name that had brought him both great joy and immeasurable pain for over a decade and relaxed at home with the greatest people alive, he was happy ( ... )

It warmed Rachel's heart to see Kurt happy. Too long had he been grieving. Grabbing a drink off one of the passing trays, she made her way over to him, waiting until he had finished talking to a few of his fashion colleagues.

"Congrats, Mr. Hummel. This is quite the shindig. Much better than my basement party our Junior Year."

As he turned from his fellow executives to greet her, Kurt made a small approving smile at her choice of attire for the party. "True as that may be, I think we both know whose party will be better remembered in twenty years." A joke more than anything, but there was some truth to it. The gatherings they had as teenagers were few and far between, but that night held a lot of meaning for a good majority of them.

"And may I just say, you look beautiful tonight. My little Rachel, all grown up."

"You can thank the kids for that. I think Audrey was on the phone with Katie and Demitri for an hour, describing everything in my closet..." She shook her head, ever so slightly amused.

"And the night is still young...anything can happen." And oh boy was something about to happen. Rachel felt a bit guilty about knowing Kurt and Blaine had been played and but good...but she also was a firm believer in the end result. So she'd live with the guilt...and just transfer it over to her children the next time they mentioned leaving home.

Oh, now that got a hearty laugh out of him. Kaitlyn really was a genius in her own right, though if were privy to their little plan for tonight, he might've been a bit less approving. Only a bit. Instead, Kurt shook his head with a smile, "As long as I don't find someone in my closet at the end of all of this, I'll consider tonight a success for everyone."

"What? You mean no slightly drunk Kurt Hummel makeovers? Why must you disappoint us all?"

"Oh, honey. We'd need quite a few more glasses of champagne before I got to that point." Kurt had never been a huge drinker, and in his forty years, he could count the number of times he'd been drunk on his hands. But the night really was young, and he was feeling great. There was no telling what could happen.

"Guess we'll have to wait and see where this night ends up," As Rachel tries not to smile too brightly, lest Kurt see through her clever casual facade. "The new line looks amazing."

There was something a bit suspicious about how optimistic Rachel seemed for the night's conclusion, but Hell if Kurt was ever going to question it. In the very least, it was a good thing to see. "Thank you. It's been so long, I worried I'd fallen out of touch, but I'm very proud with how it came out. Kaitlyn tied it all together beautifully."

Please...Rachel was always optomistic...in her own way. Or at least that's what she will tell you. Whether or not it's true...eh...

But she's counting on the optomism being contagious and is extremely glad when it is. "She has a way of doing that. You've got yourself quite a protege, Hummel."

Kurt laughed a little at Tina's comment, and leaned in close with a playful grin, "All part of a fashion designer's mentality, dear. The world is my canvas, and I'll take every opportunity to paint it that I get. Though I must admit, our own Kaitlyn Anderson played a large role in tonight's get together. I may have only just started bringing her into the fashion world, but I'm positive she'll make it just fine without me." His own little protege, found in none other than his exboyfriend's daughter. There was probably some irony to be had in that, but for the most part, Kurt was just happy to have someone to mentor. It got him designing again, and gave him a chance to pass his knowledge on to someone that could us it. Isn't that every parent's dream?

The comment on 'Kurt Hummel parties' made him smile pleasantly to himself a little. Tina had hit the nail on the head with that one, ad it warmed his heart. "I'm wonderful, doll. Better than I've been in years." And then his smile was more directed at her, a friend from so long ago that was still faithfully by his side. "With company like this, how could I not be?"

"I know. It's still a bit of a mystery to me, how our little ragtag family grew into its own little community. I suppose that's just a part of growing up." In many ways, it really was. They'd all had their stints outside of Ohio, doing what they dreamed of doing. But in the end, it all led back here. It had to be a thing of magic.
