Summary: They've been to Madam Puddifoot's four times now - and James is still ordering the first date special.
Ridiculous title is ridiculous. Reposted for html fail because my computer hates me (apologies) again
The door to Madam Puddifoot’s chimes loudly as Lily and James step inside, the former mentally bracing herself. If it wasn’t for the fact that it makes James happy to bring her here, like he’s accomplished something just by having a girlfriend to bring to this place - although Lily will admit it, she’s also got a thing for those pomegranate cakes - she’d already be tugging on his arm and begging to leave.
James gives the waitress his usual dapper smile as she shows them to their seats. “The first date special with two hot-chocolates," he says, "- but can you put extra marshmallows in Lily’s, please?”
Lily finds herself grinning as she slides into her seat, James’ hand on the small of her back to support her. Overstated romantic gestures aside, she’s found that she likes James best when he’s like this, paying attention to her wants, her needs, remembering the little things. It’s not like he hasn’t had seven years of borderline obsessiveness to catalogue these things, but - still. It's hot.
Either way, there’s still something that bothers her.
“James, we’ve been here four times now as an actual couple, and you still want to order the first date menu.” Lily narrows her eyes suspiciously, taking in the sight of her boyfriend’s now rather confused face. Like always, Madam Puddifoot’s leaves her feeling smothered; the candles, she can handle, but the ridiculously crude Cupid’s hanging above each table - not so much. Not to mention that James, in some kind of retroactive throwback, is being oblivious. They’ve been here barely five minutes, and she can already feel the heat rising in her face.
Scratch the last one, she thinks. James Potter is always - will always be - oblivious.
It’s one of the things she lo-likes best about him, the way he used to shrug his shoulders in an almost bemused acceptance of her rejections, like he’d known he was always going to win (He was. Lily just hadn’t known that at the time), and now the feel of his breath against her ear as he whispers that he’s willing to slow down when she really, really doesn’t want to stop.
It doesn’t stop her raising her eyebrows though, partially in annoyance, partially in curiousity. “James Potter,” she says. “Are you telling that - that you, of all people, are afraid of commitment?”
“Wha-no. Of course not,” he says. “Shit, you wanted me to order the true love thing didn’t you, although Remus said it would be entirely inappropriate given our current number of dates. I’m sorry to cock it up so bad, Lily, I really am - but it took us seven years to get to here and something told me that scones with jam and cream was taking it just a bit too far.”
And she is saying stop now, stop being silly and really - it’s easier just to silence him with a kiss.
“Besides,” he says, cupping her chin as he responds in kind. “I really can’t resist those pomegranate cakes, either."

I haven't the faintest why, but I actually loved this line: "If it wasn’t for the fact that it makes James happy to bring her here, like he’s accomplished something just by having a girlfriend to bring to this place - although Lily will admit it, she’s also got a thing for those pomegranate cakes - she’d already be tugging on his arm and begging to leave."
Nice work! =)

And I totally get you on the inadequacy thing - I got a few nice comments and thought that I was doing something right... until I read everyone else's fic. :/

What have you written for Glee? I love being pointed to new reading material because there are SO many fics out there, I don't know where to start.
Yeah, I just jumped in with two random fics (one for Puck/Quinn and one for Santana/Blaine!friendship - random much?) before actually reading others and I was just like: O_O CONSIDERING DELETION.

/random stalkerish appreciation
Oh, and out of all my Glee stuff, I'd probably recommend you read Askew first. :D

Thank you so much!! I had a lot of fun writing that, even though I was scared out of my mind to write Sue.
...K I'm gonna friend you now, if that's alright hahaha
And I love that icon.

And yeah - I have my fic for this comm going as well as about a dozen over things I started writing last year, and then I wrote two Glee fics in three days until it was like 'what the hell, I'm going to roll with it'. That said, I'm not entirely sure I'll ever have the guts to write Sue.

That line was my absolute favorite, lol. This was such a cute moment between the two of them. Poor Lily for having to put up with James' commitment issues.

Secondly, this is so awkwardly wonderful - for all his wooing of Lily, of course James would be a commitment phobe. I'm kind of in love with how you've used the menu in the prompt to actually express so much. It’s one of the things she lo-likes best about him - augh! Perfection.
Fantastic drabble, bb, thank you for this - go team Doe!

And really, I couldn't help - that menu (and everything it implied) was genius. Thank you ♥
More icon love!
