My employers recently declared a surplus. That translates to: we're going to lay people off. It's been a very long and painful process for many people here. They told everyone on the same day that they were going to be let go. Those people were told that they had to remain on the payroll until July 25 to receive the pay package that they'd get.
After a week of that, people who were let go were given the option to leave with the same package. This was for all of those people who were close to retirement anyway, and were saying "They should have picked me! I would be happy to leave if it would save someone else's job." Well, they were given one week to make that decision. That was last Friday.
Just now, we were told that several other offices in the Midwest needed more time to deal with the surplus issues. Translation, those dumb-asses in the other buildings didn't get their act together quick enough and now they need more time. (It's like those idiots who wait until April 10th to do their taxes.) So we were just gathered together for a meeting to tell everyone that the surplus folks need to stick around until August 15th! That's right, "need". If they leave earlier, they don't get the pay package.
If I were one of these people, I would have already made attempts to line up a job that I could start on July 28th. If I had, I wouldn't be able to start that job, now. I'd probably lose that job on the basis that I'm unreliable! This is complete bullshit! Why the hell are they dragging this out?
