No, not the Elijah movie... but this past week.
WARNING: A lot of onomatopoeia in this post.
We had severe weather here Monday night, and I am still sleep-deprived from this and my recent health issues. It rained all day, dropped into the 30s that night, and then at about 4:15 a.m., I woke up to use the restroom and just after I went back to bed, I heard the loud BOOM! of a transformer blowing. And then our power went out. And tried to come back on. And went out again. And tried again. And then went out for good.
I thought, "No problem... it's in the thirties outside so I won't get hot. I'll just go back to sleep." But then I had trouble sleeping without my electric fan, which supplies white noise. And so I laid there for a while and then I started hearing alarming sounds outside.
"CRACK!" Like a gunshot. "CRASH!" Like a car something being hit. "SPLIT!" Like wood tearing.
I realized it was limbs cracking off the four huge, towering pine trees in our front yard, and in our neighbors' yards.
The trees were so full of ice that the weight was causing the limbs to break, and it was very frightening because some of these limbs can be giant, and if they hit your roof? There's no telling what kind of damage they can cause to your house.
My brother yelled at me from downstairs to come down since he didn't feel I was safe sleeping upstairs because of the trees (that was reassuring), so I went down and we both tried to sort of doze in our recliners. However, it was just about impossible with all the noise outside.
Finally the noise ended at about 10:00 that morning. The trees were still full of ice---our bushes outside were all drooping over and at least three huge pine branches---most six inches across or so---were lying in the front yard. One hit our neighbor's truck, but it didn't appear to do any damage. Anyway, I got no sleep at all after 4:15 a.m. that night and am still making up for it.
I hate pine trees! In hurricanes they won't uproot because they're too big, but the branches are so prone to breaking. *shakes head*
Other than that, same ole, same ole, I guess. My friend R is actually coming into town Saturday and we're going to the Menil Collection---an art museum here---and to dinner. I haven't seen her in over a year, so it should be fun. I feel a bit awkward about it actually, since I've been such a lousy friend to her these past few years. I've sort of shut myself away from everyone I know, her included. It's hard to undo that and I feel awful about it.
I'm hoping I can convince her to have lunch at the Hobbit Cafe. :)
In other news, I'm LOTR fanfic-deprived this week. For my fellow Aragorn h/c lovers: Is Canafinwe going to update A Long and Weary Way soon, I hope? I'm dying here! And Aragorn isn't getting any younger... he's got things to do and places to go!
And Frodo... still the most adorable ever.
