I'm fixing to leave for my parents' and won't be back tonight... my dad has a doctor's appt. WAY early in the morning and I'm staying the night so I can mother-sit. So I won't be online after this. I suppose I *could* drive over there way early... but we're in the process now of moving stuff (furniture, beds, basically reorganizing) in the house ( Read more... )

I remember talking to a friend years ago about Victoria Holt novels. And she was saying that she used to like them until she figured out the formula and then she never read one after that.

Myself, I kept reading them for a few years, at which point I got burned out.

I think that means there's inevitably going to be common strains to fic genres and everyone's going to have their own appetites for different ones. It's funny that you bring this up because, as I was reading the comments to El's post, I started to think, "well, h/c, it's so formulaic" And then gave myself a little slap and said, "you twit, all the different genres can appear that way". And I'm no one to talk, given how much I crave the mushy romantic stuff :-)

OK, here you go. I might be a word shy of 100 or over a word :-)

Aragorn knelt by Frodo’s side and tucked the cloak around the shivering hobbit. Oh, just so carefully was he to make sure that the edges of the wool were folded exactly right over Frodo’s shoulders. The wind blew chill in Wilderland, and it was Aragorn’s constant worry to keep his little family safe and relatively warm.

“There,” he said, sitting back on his haunches and admiring his work. “Warm enough?”

Frodo rolled his eyes. “My feet?”

Sure enough, there were Frodo’s feet poking out from the bottom of the cloak, his ever-swelling belly having grown too large for the cloak.

Oooo... what a treat to read this from you! What an adorable scenario... the idea of the cloak not fitting properly... and Aragorn being concerned about his little family. Gah---am a puddle now, of course. :)

My brain was so clouded by pregnant Frodo, I didn't even reply to your other post!

I don't know... just about everything to me has some kind of formula... but I do see h/c as too broad to fit into one type, since there are romance h/cs and action h/cs and dark au h/cs...

I CANNOT read historical romances, however, due to the "formulaicness." I used to try to read them, but they all seemed so much alike I gave up. However, I'm sure I probably never did read a wide enough selection of authors.
