A Myth from the Darkness: The Birth of Teyla Emmagan

May 11, 2007 02:48

In the early days there was but one moon, one sun, and seven stars. When the gods left, sinking deep within the seas and Elizabeth's mind, the moon and sun likewise sunk and all the worlds were dark always.

Only the seven stars remained. For generations they were the only light. In the darkness, grew not only monsters, but a new light, one that would last forever.

In a village unremarkable in every way, an ordinary woman, pained from the child kicking in her stomach, awoke and lit a candle. Though the flame burned long and bright, the candle never melted nor blew out. By that light a group of hunters, lost for many days, found their way home.

A wise woman of the village noted this sign and prophesied that the life forming within the woman would become a leader for their people, a light in the darkness.

The candle burned five months until the woman gave birth. As the child drew her first breath of air, the flame blew out. The wick was not even singed.

The woman named her daughter 'Teyla' from 'tey,' which means 'road' in some of the old languages. The wise one blessed the child and added the name 'Emmagan,' the brightest of the stars.

Teyla Emmagan slept in her mother's arm peacefully, knowing-- as she would always know-- exactly where she was.
