Today, I had a rather "long-playing" (LP) adventure at the
Pasadena City College Flea Market!
Arriving a little later than I usually do, I had permitted myself to bypass many of my usual bits of the show and make an utter beeline towards my new paradise by the parking lot light - The Vinyl Alley. Getting back into music again has given me more of a reason if not to buy at this time (oh, for a disposable income!), but to look to my little collector heart's content! For years, I collected vinyl, and my immense collection back in Canada of Pink Floyd, Who, and Beatles rarities (amongst other delights) is my pride and joy. Since I moved to the U.S., I haven't had any type of record player of which to speak (miss, you my little Canadian quad!) and with no steady income, I have only given the section melancholy glances.
Today, I delved right in, and immersed myself in the sounds yet again...if only to just enjoy looking.
Those who are familiar with this monthly post may be a tad disappointed, since I didn't really do much else but gorge my senses on all things vinyl, but stick around, you may still enjoy yourselves!
And now, we proudly present a special feature...
Elisa's Adventure in the Vinyl Village
(or should that be Tales from the Vinyl Wood?) XD
Having only just begun the daunting task of prowling through the myriad boxes, piles, and stacks of vinyl, I was delighted to discover this gem. This is Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Tarkus, which is one of my very favorites of their albums. Having never seen it on vinyl previously, I did what any good record fan would do and squealed gleefully aloud.
Having been a member of the court of King Crimson since I was a teen, it's always lovely to see their work on vinyl. This is Discipline, one of my favorites, partly because I was first introduced to "Crimso" through the Adrian Belew era and loved them instantly. Belew is still one of my favorite guitarists, and to this day, I still rank seeing him play at David Bowie's "Sound and Vision" tour one of the highlights of my concert-going life. Also saw loads of copies of Three of a Perfect Pair (another Belew-era album), In the Court of the Crimson King, Red, and another one I'd never seen on vinyl previously, In the Wake of Poseidon. I would LOVE to track down a copy of Lizard, as its cover is so pretty. It's also a perverse favorite of mine, since it's so bizarre, yet so awesome.
Saw three copies of this album today by Keith Emerson's former, pre-ELP band, The Nice. Not a big fan of their stuff, but I'm willing to give it a second chance.
How could, "Fuck all that, we've gotta get on with these" be objectionable to anyone? XD
Gotta love a dealer with a sense of humor.
Speaking of dealers, I must've spent at least an hour at this guy's booth. He had EVERYTHING - rare pressings, picture discs, all sorts of stuff. It was a feast for the senses, and I was honored even to just look through his insanely amazing collection.
Thankfully, he will be at next month's show as well, so I have another chance to take a peruse with my mind less blown by his wares.
This is the most awesome album I saw today. Ian McDonald and Michael Giles were two original members of King Crimson, who left the band because they thought Crimson was a bit "too dark" for their liking. The music on this album could essentially be described as "Happy Crimson," which isn't exactly to my tastes, but still good nonetheless. Granted I absolutely ADORE Giles, Giles and Fripp, but could never really get into McDonald and Giles. Think I missed Bob too much. It was just really awesome to see this "in the flesh" after only hearing it.
Phew! That was FUN! Let's see what else I saw today, shall we?
Being a bit fan of cheesecake art, particularly Gil Elvgren, this was a nifty little etching(?) of one of his prints.
Loved this beautiful apothecary(?) box of treasures.
And now, a brief, yet no less frightening installment of...
Dolls That May Come Alive and Kill You in the Middle of the Night
Watch out, it's Liberace-stein!
Speaking of hybrids, WTF is this supposed to be?!
As I've said previously, you can find almost anything at the Pasadena City College Flea Market!
Hope you all enjoyed coming along with me on my adventure today!
