My Adventure at the Pasadena City College Flea Market (March 2012 edition)

Mar 04, 2012 14:29

Packed with cute little dogs, hot silver foxes, and other delights, the Pasadena City College Flea Market was easy to enjoy today!

With the weather being picture perfect (albeit a tad on the hot side), the crowds were out in droves. Having gotten smart and set my alarm, I was up and into Pasadena by 9:30am, which was absolutely ideal. The throngs weren't overly thick yet and the dealers were still in good spirits. Perfect timing.

Being on a semi-quest for a certain brooch I saw at another show, I made a point of slowing down at jewelry tables this time, and had a wonderful time pawing through costume jewelry and lingering over beautiful trinkets like this.

Who needs blue suede shoes when you can have these?

Those who have faithfully read these reports know that I'm always on the lookout for these Campus Cuties. This one was sitting on one of my favorite dealer's tables, but sadly, she wasn't in the best shape, so I left her there. (It looked as if a small someone - be it human or animal - had enjoyed gnawing at the side of her head, poor thing!)

This needs to be the title of my next novel. If I could find a scientist who wrote poetry on the side to fall for me, I think I'd be in heaven! ;)

One of the dealers saw me taking this photo and politely asked what I was doing. When I informed him I wrote a monthly "report" on the flea market for fun (and essentially to promote the show I love so dearly), he was mollified. Think he was also a tad impressed I recognized him from my other favorite show, the Glendale Community College Swap Meet!

Note to newlyweds - don't invite monkeys to your wedding. They'll only upstage you.

In line for the restroom, I overheard a conversation between a dealer and another woman, in which she was complaining about how many trips to England she had to make to find the antiques she sold at the flea market. I piped up, offering my "assistance" services to make said trips and find trinkets for her. She said it was tougher than it sounded, but I would LOVE to do stuff like that! She caught a glimpse of the claddagh ring I always wear and confirmed it was indeed an antique. I've had it for ages; I picked it up at an antique show in Canada years ago.

Not having quite the need to obsessively look at records today as I did last month, I made a point of heading through the parking garage to the other, smaller parking lot, which is usually full of dealers. Instead, this met my shocked gaze. Sometimes I forget I'm walking around a college that is constantly upgrading and growing!

And now, we proudly present another edition of...

Dolls That May Come Alive and Kill You in the Middle of the Night

Today's show was especially rife with creepiness, so please, take all small children and those with delicate constitutions out of the room before continuing to read this.

Faithful readers may recognize this "doll" from a previous post. At this point, I believe she's more "conceptual art," but no less scary!

Watch out for the cowboy zombie mannequin behind you!

Would you let your newborn recline on this? Neither would I.

Before we go on to our last doll today, I urge you to brace yourself for the terrors I am about to share with you...

*silent scream*

Crikey! After that insanity, how about a little sorbet?

Ahhhh, that's better, isn't it? How cute are these little Steiff dudes, eh?

This dealer had loads of really neat paperbacks, including loads of Doctor Who.

Another of my favorite dealers informed me he had had this hilarious sign in his garage for years. I retorted, "I hope you're not keeping the girls mentioned in the sign in your garage as well!" I'm such a card, aren't I? XD That's what watching loads of horror movies lately does to you.

Speaking of one of my favorite film genres, I must make a brief plug for the horror I saw last night, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. This brilliant little gem from Canada is an absolute delight that I enjoyed from start to finish. With wonderful special effects, a clever plot, hilarious horror homages, and excellent SFX, the film was loaded with enough humor and gore to satisfy any fan. And hey, it's on Netflix Instant Watch, what more could you ask for?!

Hope you all enjoyed coming along with me today!
