It's that time of year again for Discworld fans. Maybe not so much for the beginning fans, but for those of us who Were There.
If you've read Night Watch, you know where there is, and if you don't know where there is, then you weren't there. Today we wear the lilac.
I even bought some fake lilac for the occasion, because this side of the pond all of the real lilacs are dead by now. The up side is that I can use this year after year. I'm wearing it in my hair today.
For those of you who don't know what I'm rambling on about, it is the Glorious 25th of May, which is the closest thing that Discworld fans have to a holiday which celebrates their fandom. Discworld is a wonderful series of books by Terry Pratchett. Read them.
Today in Discworld is the anniversary of the Glorious People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road. The barricades went up, and then they came down. It is also, coincidentally (or not) Young Sam Vimes's birthday.
"Truth! Justice! Freedom! Reasonably Priced Love! And a Hard-Boiled Egg!"
"We own all your helmets/ We own all your shoes/ We own all your generals/ Touch us and you'll lose!/ Morporkia! Morporkia!/ Morporkia owns the day!/ We can rule you wholesale/ Touch us and you'll pay!"
"Don't put your trust in revolutions. They just come around again. That's why they're called revolutions."
"They did the job they didn't have to do, and they died doing it, and you can't give them anything. Do you understand? They fought for those who'd been abandoned, they fought for one another, and they were betrayed. Men like them always are. What good would a statue be? It'd just inspire new fools to believe they're going to be heroes. They wouldn't want that. Just let them be. Forever."
On a Real Life note, I had my last class of the year today, and all I have to do is write my last paper and pack and then I go home at around 11:00 tomorrow morning. It has been, overall, a good year. I'll have more of a retrospective when it's over, probably.
