The problem is that most men in the real world are simply not like that...
...because they have different ways to improve their reproductive success.
For women, it's simply get good genes and then the support to raise the kid and help themselves, whether or not it's the same man or not.
For men, the above works, but you can add more if you oppurtunistically take advantage of other opportunities too (read: willing women). If you get them knocked up, for little historical cost mind you, then you get bonus fitness into the next generation. The more attractive you are--physically, fiscally, or socially--the more oppurtunities you have and you can be choosier about your primary relationship and have more opportunities for other dalliances.
That's evolutionary psychology and behavioral ecology and people don't go out to have kids all the time, right?
Not really, it's all in the "instinctual" part of the brain.
It's not something you really concsiously do, it's simply how you are and who you're attracted to and how you feel instead of think,
Romance novels--in a way--are female emotionaly masturbation because they portray what most women want in a man:
-Good genes (Appearance)
-Fidelity (Reliable access/support)
-Providership (Physical/Safety/Fiscal support)
