Staying Through the Rain - July 10, 2006
It was probably about 7 when the clouds rolled onto the summerfest fair grounds where myself and the mannequin's were scheduled to play later that evening. I was en route to a signing when I noticed the first drops of rain collecting on the ground as we made our way through the crowd. We didn't think much of it, but as I began talking to the people who had waited so patiently in the heat to say hello the sky opened in a way I have only seen on a summer day in the Midwest. People were scrambling, running for shelter anywhere they could find it. The tent I was beneath became useless in the sideways rain. I've always said I have been blessed with incredible fans but yesterday I will admit I was shocked and moved by how well that statement was supported. With hail raining down from the sky above and an entire park of people vanished or hiding, the line to our little signing was unmoved. They huddled together beneath the few umbrellas they had between them, watching the rain gather around their feet and without complaint waited until each and every person made their way to the booth to shake hands get and get a picture or autograph. I looked back proudly a couple of times at the assortment of record label representatives who I had just met that day knowing that they were learning first hand why I love my job. When the signing was through the rain had died down, but we past stage after shut down stage. The park was a ghost town. An hour before it was teaming with tens of thousands and now it was just an abandoned carnival. As the car pulled around I got a clearer view of the stage we were set to headline and what I saw was something I'll remember forever. People. Not just a few, a thousand or more who didn't move an inch in the face of an unrelenting storm. By the time we took the stage it was the largest Jack's concert we've played yet and one of the largest in my career to date. And for one night only, I will say taking that pill didn't irritate me even a little. In fact it tasted pretty damn sweet.
Thanks
