mum gone to Taupo yesterday til Sunday and then she's going back to Taiwan on Wednesday.
I woke up this morning feeling so alnoe. The house is so quiet. I found myself entertaining dark thoughts.
Usually in the morning, mum would be blasting chinese radio, ok, not quite blasting, but she'd have it on both in her room upstairs and downstaris in the kitchen. I guess that's how she gets her news so ok. But pretty much all they do on the chinese radio is talking, no music or anything.
Bah anyway also one of my bestie friend Taf has gone on her holidays yesterday for like a month. So I've got my other bestie, but I don't see them as often, and it's mostly boys I talk to at Liggins, and it's just not the same as talking to a girl.
bah humbug
so yeah I do have flat-mates in our house, so I'm not technically alone, (also got my dog with me). but I hardly see them. One of them have dinner at like 11pm or midnight.
Reading UoA student mag Craccum's news section today, and there was a completely biased story, I hate stupid scare-mongering bs new stories.
It was also under 'This just in' section like it's some 'new' news. read:
"Students who have been campaigning for a new milkshake bar in AUSA are now questioning their efforts following the release of the book, The Devil in the Milk, by professor Keith Woodward. Woodward's careful research has revealed that type A1 protein, the type that Fonterra uses, is associated with many severe illnesses. We think that university should only allow type A2, proven to be completely safe, to be served on its premises. Section 181 of the Education Act suggests that university administration must exercise due diligence in ensuring the health of students. Unfortunately, the official line is that there is nothing wrong with NZ's milk supply. Most of the NZ's milk supply is type A1. Diabetes, heart disease, kidney diesease, schizophrenia, and inflammatory bowel disease are just a few of the illnesses linked with type A1 consumption. One of the critics of Fonterra's choice to continue investment with type A1, was found dead in Fiji, chocked to death on a French fry. The $8.4 billion a year industry cannot afford to acknowledge the problem by switching the herd to A2, a process that would only take 7-8 years. If it is proven that Fonterra had prior knowledge to the ill-health effects of A1 protein, similar class actions to those against tobacco companies could result"
Background: NZ and other countries produces a mixture of A1 and A2 protein in the milk from cow. A2 protein is the orginial version of the protein, but sometime down the line in history, some cow's DNA mutated and produces A1, which the consumption of it correlates with childhood diabete and heard disease.
points from the news story:
- the book was released in 2007
- Prof Keith Woodward only did his 'careful research' of other scientist's literature and finding, he did not do his own scientific research.
- there is CORRELATION between A1 and childhood diabete and heart disease -> correlation is not the same as cause & effect. A lot of people drink milk, and so far mix A1/A2 milk is available, diabete and heart disease is already on the rise anyway.
- effect of A1 or A2 on the development of the disease is still unproven. Research has been done in mice. mice is not the same as human.
- depending on where the milk was sources, there could be more A2 than A1 from Fonterra milk and vice versa. It was a random mutation. There is no 'A1 milk' only 'mix of A1/A2 milk'.
- Of course Fonterra did not had 'prior knowledge', the health effect would have been too weak
- A2 milk is available, but it is more expensive. If it is up to the students, would they choose cheaper milkshake containing mix of A1/A2 that is probably safe or more expensive milkshake?
- first the story mention the students compaigning for a new milkshake bar in AUSA, and then it say the university is responsible for providing safe milk. AUSA is not the same as university - different governance. Linkage to big people like the university makes it seen more like a cover-up story or scandal...
- WTF? with the guy dead in Fiji chocked on a fry?
- drinking milk is a whole lot healthier than drinking coke. Otherwise drink water.
ok I've chilled a bit now...
