Day 8 - Prompt: write a scene in the middle of a novel called "The Long, Dirty Afterwards."
Oh look, it's Disaster fic Inspired by current events...
Title: Threes
Jake swept up the broken glass while Bobby held the dustpan. Nick was supposed to be double checking the gas meter but he was conspicuously out front with the rest of them, checking his phone instead and passing on rumors.
"Man, first the earthquake, now they say that hurricane is going to send storms all the way inland to here."
"Inland to here? You make it sound like there's a beach closer than a three day drive."
"Yeah, and it's going to make it all the way here. But that wasn't what I was going for, what do you think the third thing will be."
"Please, not that again."
"But everything always happens in threes. We've had an earthquake, we're about to get the storm of the century, so what's the third? If it wasn't for the rain I'd say a big fire." Nick laughed, "Hey, earth, wind, air, and fire, that would get all the classic elements."
"Right, we're going to get a huge fire that will burn up the whole city. Right after we get, what were they predicting, ten inches of rain?" Jake shook his head and kept at the glass. "I think that's a stretch."
"Yeah. I guess you're right. Ten inches was actually what they predicted the minimum rainfall would be. Heh, don't worry, I found a web site with flood maps. We're safe for a lot more than ten inches. But half the roads to anywhere will probably be flooded."
"Fine, there's your third disaster, earthquake, storm, and flood."
"Oh come on man, the flood is part of the storm that doesn't count. A flood wouldn't be anything but more water."
"Guys?" Bobby spoke up for the first time, looking a little nervous. "Could it be Mount Williams. I caught a blog where a guy was saying the earthquake might be Mount Williams getting ready to erupt again. Does lava count as fire?"
