back in 1928 a poet/journalist decided there should be a day set aside to celebrate the hawaiian spirit, especially the making/wearing of leis. thus the song
"may day is lei day in hawaii" was born. today there are various festivities around the island to take part in. there was the free lei giveaway at one of the malls (not my mall of course...i've never gotten a lei:(, but that's another story), there is a may day festival at the end of waikiki, and there is also a may day concert at the outdoor "shell" where hawaiian music and hula (music and dance) will be performed.
what am i doing to celebrate? my friends and i are going drinking. don't worry...i'll only drink mai tais, pina coladas and hawaiian beer to keep in the spirit;)
