So we're getting a laptop to replace the one I have to give back to work. It'd be about $400-$600 more to get an Mac instead of a Dell. Mr. C thinks it's not worth the money. He also thinks it's too difficult to have a desktop PC and laptop Mac, and that sending files between the two will be a nightmare ( Read more... )

I'm a Mac-girl through and through, so my instinct is to say, hell yeah, it's worth it. But I am not sure that is useful advice.

I can tell you though that I live with people who own a PC, and we don't seem to have much trouble sharing files. I think it depends what sort of files you are going to want to share. For us it is mostly mp3, avi files etc., which are compatible with both, no problems. The only times we run into problesm is with stuff I don't have software for, like Word, Excel etc. You can get that stuff for Mac of course, but it didn't come with the basic OSX package, so I guess you'd be looking at even more expense if you want to get those kinds of software.

Umm, don't suppose that was very useful...

That is helpful, actually. The only thing that will be confused is my iPod, which has to be formatted for either Mac or PC, so I'll have to choose one machine to be my primary. As for the file stuff, we have a friend who works for Microsoft and he can get us a friends rate on MS Office, so either way, we'll have Word and Excel.

Food for thought.

Also, your icon is mesmerizing. Yummy!

Oh, on a practical note, does your Mac ever give you trouble - the blue screen of death, for example? Or just randomly stop working and have to go to the doctor? I know they don't get viruses, right? Is figuring out how to use the programs instictive? I'm the master of the right-click, which doesn't exist for Macs, so I'm going to have to learn a whole new way of computing.

I love my Mac. I have ALWAYS been a dedicated PC user, but I am converted. Like WHOA. Go for it!

(um, e-mail me if you want, you know, actual INFORMATION)

Mr. C is a fabulous man with many wonderful qualities, including totally gay boots, but he has a mental block when it comes to Macs. I guess I'm pretty lucky that that is one of his bigger flaws.

But still, a new laptop is never a bad thing. So I'm just going to focus on how nice it will be not to have to clear the internet history and temp files and cookies and all that good stuff every couple of days.

Also, I can finally put the Canadian flag sticker that brooklinegirl gave me on it.

Hi. Wandering through from friendsfriends. Had the exact same decision to make some months back and went for the cheaper Dell. Am pretty happy with it, but wish (in a wistful rather than passionate way) I'd gone for the Mac. Am bad wtih tech and would like to love my laptop more and struggle with it less, and suspect that might be more likely with Mac. Or maybe I just like shiny things. Good luck with your new laptop, whichever you get!

I really, really wanted the Mac, but just couldn't justify the more expensive Mac. I've had a Dell laptop from work, and it's generally been fine, so we went with Dell again (a model that was rated a best buy by Consumer Reports). Since I'm used to the temperamental nature of PC, I'm sure I'll be able to deal with the usual PC crap that's bound to happen. And maybe next time we need a laptop, I'll be back at work full time and the Mac won't be as much of a reach.

On the plus side, I was able to convince him that since we weren't shelling out for a Mac, that it was okay to pay the extra $28 to get the blue casing. So at least it will be pretty!

On a totally separate note, I may stare at Callum's mouth and fingers in your icon all day (is that from Last Night?). I have 2 1/2 more hours to kill at work, and that seems like a good way to pass the time.

Yay for a lovely new laptop! I also hope to move to Mac someday, but there are far worse fates than having a shiny new (blue! neat) Dell.

and that seems like a good way to pass the time.

Definitely. Yup, it's from Last Night. It and this one are both by jcjoeyfreak, and they are kind of fascinating, aren't they? Pretty, pretty man.

(Also, hi! Thanks for stopping by. I suck at commenting on fic, but I've really enjoyed the stuff you've been posting. It's always yay to get a good new writer in fandom. I love that dS is still sucking fangirls and guys in even though it's been off the air for 9 years.)
