Yeah, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch part five either because just WTF? That WAS like the worst death ever and Ianto was the most underused character and his relationship with Jack could really have been so interesting/hot and Ianto was clearly MY FAVORITE CHARACTER, too. I really, really don't like Gwen or the idea of Jack/Gwen which is part of why I haven't watched part five. I think they've made her a bit sueish here. But yeah, that was such a random and pointless death which I guess was the point they were trying to get across but why Ianto? There was so much more they could have done with him, they'd just expanded his world to include a sister, etc. If there is any more Torchwood after this, like you, I won't be watching.
Last night as I was trying to go to sleep, all I could think was that they Tasha Yar'd him. Such a waste, and for what? So some faceless alien species could win and show how powerful and scary they were? Uh... stupid. Massive fail.
It is just as bad as any of those spoilers might indicate. It's a train wreck of redonc from the beginning of part three onward, if not earlier. I can't understand what RTD was thinking. And I've read on some British boards that there's supposed to be a Series 4. "With what?" is my question. The only thing I can figure is with Gwen waking up and saying, "Woah, that was weird! I'm never eating jalapenos before bed ever again!" If only...
And pretty much everything. I have heard it was "great, dramatic television" but why do this with an established show and characters people love? Couldn't RTD make something like this the premise for a bleak science fiction TV movie, and not completely destroy everything?
I mean, I know it was an adult-themed show, but Captain Jack was introduced on Dr. Who, which is for kids, and there were kids who loved the character. I just think the whole thing was a rotten thing to do to fans. :(
It was a really rotten thing to do. I didn't watch part 5, so I don't know what all Jack does in part 5, but I know it's awful for him to endure just from how he was in the last three minutes, if nothing else. Torture him for a thousand years, he won't care and he'll joke with you about it when it's over, but whatever happened there, and Ianto dying, my God, a man can only take so much, you know? If he could have put a bullet in his head and had it stick, he so would have. He was destroyed as a person, finished. It was terrible.

And the stuff they made Jack do.
