Internship:
My internship is going absolutely well. Still at the top with hours in my department and gaining so much insight! :D Yesterday night when I was double shifting, there was one nurse who took time out of her schedule to show me and another volunteer around and explain how different machines and medicine worked. She even gave us advice on getting into nursing school and how to study for classes and even some tips with IVs and dealing with difficult patients. It was so nice of her to take the extra time to teach us. I really appreciated it especially because I know how busy and stressful it can get on the floor.
One reason why I really like working at St. Marys instead of Hoag, THE NURSES. There's just a tremendous difference between the nurses at St. Marys and at Hoag. The differences are remarkable. I feel like most of them take the extra time to help patients and they love their jobs. Most of them have really great bedside manners...Even most of the doctors! They all care! It makes me happy to see that. :D
To me, it seems like most of the nurses are pretty close with each other and joke and have fun while still maintaining professionalism. I love the night shift nurses! They are so fun to be around. Plus it's pretty cool how they give me a phone too while I'm on my shift so they can reach me when they need help. I feel like I'm part of the staff. [:
There's just so much culture at St. Marys. I absolutely love it! I've learned a lot from each of the different nurses and patients there. Most of them studied abroad so it's so great hearing their stories. And I love hearing about other cultures from talking with patients.
Nurses at St. Marys can also wear scrubs that they like....some of their scrubs are soooo cute!! It's not all uniformal, which I think makes a difference. Who would want to see blue scrubs every single day?
I'm actually really excited and looking forward to the day I get to wear scrubs and get to choose my own designs on my scrub. XD I know, it's totally silly, but I'm really looking forward to being a nurse. I really wish I could skip to that part already. I feel like such a dork too...I've been recently looking at some scrubs online. >.< But I just can't wait! I mean a job where you basically wear cute pajamas to work and you're helping lives! What more could I ask for?
I also learned from yesterday that I need to start picking up Spanish again. I can't communicate with some of the patients and I feel horrible because of it. D: I also want to pick up Tagalog. There's so many Filipinos on the floor as well as patients...plus I'm still being mistaken for a Filipino so when they start speaking to me, I don't know what to do/say. D:
