Wufei stood at his office window, watching some rural brats make nuisances of themselves just outside the entrance of the building. The sun was a dazzling spot against the horizon, signalling the arrival of evening. Soon, even the rowdiest kids would run off back to their homes, safe in their ignorance of worldly affairs.
Wufei realized that he'd grown somewhat... fond of children over the past few years. Although he wasn't nearly old enough to feel any paternal urges, he thought that maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea, maybe in a couple of years though.
Fung, a co-worker from the local news department, had just held the first month feast for his third offspring - a baby girl with the brightest smile, or so he had boasted. Wufei had dropped by briefly with his gifts, but realized that he was singularly out-of-place in such a jubilant gathering of large, interrelated families. Everyone knew everyone else's business, and for some reason believed that he was an eligible bachelor looking for a young bride.
Wufei sighed presently, and smiled wryly at the thought. Any matchmaker unlucky enough to be asked to approach him with a prospective match would be thoroughly frustrated when she realized that he had no family to speak for him and was, most adamantly, not interested.
"I won't get in the way of your cleaning for much longer, aunty," he called out when he heard the familiar, padding footsteps in the hallway. The cleaning lady looked through the doorway to give him a smile and a greeting.
"Staying late again, Mr. Chang?" she asked politely, albeit kindly, despite their long acquaintance.
"I just have to get this final draft to the editor's desk," he replied with a smile. He quickly set to his task, thinking to get out before he got scolded for working too hard again.
When he finally stepped from the building, he was surprised to feel a cool breeze blowing in from the fields. It was a pleasant contrast to the hovering heat that had set in since early morning. The local brats were still running around, enjoying that final hour before their mothers called them in for dinner.
Suddenly, one of the younger boys ran straight into a passer-by, yelping loudly as he bounced back from the man's legs onto his bottom. The man's faraway blue eyes turned uncertainly at the brat at his feet and met the brown eyes of a young boy who had never seen a foreigner before. Abruptly, the man leaned down and picked the child up, releasing him only when he had gained his feet. With a nervous bow and quick thank you, the boy ran back to his laughing friends, who were now all very interested in his encounter with this tall stranger.
The man then turned his inquisitive eyes to Wufei, having probably spotted him as soon as he had stepped out of the office building.
"Sorry for making you wait," Wufei called out, walking briskly to join Heero.
"I don't mind," the Japanese man replied, giving him a quick nod. "The walk here was nice."
They started down the street towards the apartment at a leisurely pace, taking their time in the evening breeze. Although Heero had no reason to come all this way to pick Wufei up after work, the Chinese man couldn't help but feel glad that he did. On days like this, nothing could ruin the time that they spent together, not even Wufei's self-doubt and dishonesty. Their relationship was complicated, yes, and rather messy. Moreover, Wufei was decidedly not prepared to move forward yet, despite their mutual understanding. Even so, Heero accepted him as he was. Was that not enough?
"Say, Heero," Wufei thought out loud as a woman passed with a toddler and a cooing baby. "What do you say about having kids?"
Heero shot him a bewildered look, eyes wide with incomprehension.
'Score for Chang,' Wufei smirked to himself, enjoying the uncharacteristic expression on his friend's face.
"I didn't think that you had the necessary anatomic components, but I wouldn't be opposed," Heero replied seriously.
Wufei felt himself flush at the suggestion.
Heero smirked, then laughed outright and continued walking before the Chinese man could react.
'Score, Yuy,' Wufei thought wryly, starting after him.
"Alright, Yuy," he said casually, matching stride for stride. "But just one."
Heero stumbled. Wufei smirked.
'Game, Chang.'
