He wondered how he happened to get this job.
He remembered somewhere in the back of his mind Alec telling him that the littles went a little crazy when it came to Christmas decorations. Mickey was all for letting them go nuts. Really. He was. It was nice to get a little holiday spirit into Terminal City, and the kids never really had a chance to get crazy and creative back at Manticore. It just wasn’t in the cards.
Well, that and they squashed any chance of creativity with a mallet.
All he was asked to do was get some boxes of decoration for the kids to work with. Tinsel. Ornaments. A garland or two. Nothing that would really do all that much damage. He managed to find some lights, loaded them all up into boxes, and made his way back to TC without so much as a thought as to what was going to happen once he got there. However, things became more than evident when he felt like he was a dead man walking, just walking the path from the door to the center of the room. He could feel the eyes of all the little ones on him as he made his way through the room, and he gave Gloria a wary look as he joined her.
“Why do I feel like I could be breathing my last breath here?”
Gloria just rolled her eyes, before reaching for the boxes and starting to unload them. “They like Christmas. Nothing wrong with that.”
“Never said there was. But I feel like I’m carrying food to the wolves.”
There was another eye roll, and Mickey helped her to unload the rest of the boxes, spreading everything out, and then looking over at the kids. He looked over at Gloria again, and then back at them. “Ready?” he asked. She nodded, and then dropped to the ground grabbing Mickey with her as they both ducked under the table and were instantly surrounded by the feet of the kids.
“So this is Christmas, huh?” Mickey said with a snort as he leaned in closer to Gloria, letting the little ones take what they needed, then watching as they took off across the room to hang the decorations.
“Yeah,” Gloria said with a sigh as she leaned in closer. “Guess it is.”
