“Morning” Jack coaxed gently as Ianto woke up in his arms “how are you?”
“Stiff” Ianto groaned it took a moment for him to realise what he had said “I mean my muscles.”
“Can you move?”
“I suppose” Ianto groaned again pulling himself up, throwing back the duvet on the sofa and sitting up awkwardly.
It was only now Jack saw the extent of Ianto’s injuries from the previous day. He cursed himself for letting it happen.
Ianto stood and stretched his arms out, Jack mapped out his body: where the bruises where, which ribs where cracked and where there was no visible signs of trauma. Ianto rubbed his temple, as if to reduce a headache, he began to sway on his feet and fell back down on the sofa before Jack had time to catch him.
“You need to go to a doctor” Jack said caringly.
“I’ll be fine” Ianto said, in obvious discomfort.
“I’m taking you to the hospital”
“Please don’t make me go” Ianto said looking up smiling ever so slightly at the corners of his mouth
“I won’t not if you really don’t want to, but Tosh will demand it” Jack smiled, and lightly ran his fingers in Ianto’s hair.
Ianto nodded in agreement, to what Jack wasn’t quite sure.
“What time is it?” Tosh groaned, rubbing her eyes as she came out of Ianto’s room
“Half nine” Ianto said springing to his feet, with Jack close behind in case he fell down again
“Why do you have your alarm set for half six?” Tosh asked, as it woke her from her sleep, which considering the dream was a good thing.
“I- I just erm…habit” Ianto decided with a morning smile.
Jack rested his hand on Ianto’s back, Ianto shifted uncomfortably but ever so slightly, Jack assumed it was with Tosh being in the room.
“Anyone hungry?” Jack asked “my treat”
~…~
At the small, secluded and rather upmarket café, Tosh was nibbling on a croissant, Ianto stuck to coffee, even though Jack and Tosh had urged him to eat something. Jack was sitting in the middle of them with just about everything they had on offer, even if it was to coerce Ianto into eating something.
“Ianto you have to eat something” Tosh urged interrupting another of Jack’s outrageous stories, to lighten the mood.
“I’m not hungry” Ianto replied back quietly and shook his head gently
“Ianto please,” Tosh implored “I can’t remember the last time you ate something”
“I’ll be fine” Ianto assured, but neither was convinced
Tosh looked at Jack desperately.
“Please Ianto,” Jack asked holding up a triangle of toast “for me?” he said with doe-eyes
Ianto studied the offending piece of toast, “alright then,” he said taking it off Jack.
Tosh seemed to sag down in the chair with relief and Jack looked mightily pleased with himself.
~…~
“Got everything?” Jack asked Tosh and Ianto as he aided Ianto in standing up, letting him lean on him as the bruises and sore muscles began to develop.
Tosh nodded, taking the last sip of coffee, Ianto smiled politely.
Jack paid, being a man of his word -usually- whilst Ianto and Tosh waited by the door way.
“Tosh what are you doing” Ianto said in mild annoyance as Tosh started feeling him.
“I’m checking for broken bones,” Tosh said as she worked her way around his chest “how’s your head?” she said going on her tiptoes to have a closer inspection of the developing bruise forming on his temple.
“I just need some painkillers that’s all”
“You should see a doctor, a proper one” Tosh told him going back onto her heels
“What about Owen?” Ianto asked with a raised eyebrow
“I mean in a proper hospital.”
“You’re starting to sound like Jack” Ianto told her
Jack came back to the pair of them, “ready?”
Tosh exited first, and a couple barged in through the open door straight into Ianto, who stumbled and cracked his head off the wall then slid down it. Far too quick for Jack to help and Tosh was outside.
“Watch where the fuck you’re going!” Jack yelled at the offending couple, as he dropped down to Ianto’s side
“It was an acci-” the woman started
“I don’t care do you know how much damage you could have done!” Jack chastised them
“Jack I’m fine really,” Ianto said interrupting him before he did something stupid “just help me up” Ianto said
“What happened?” Tosh asked full of concern as she re-entered the café
“Those two fu-“
“Jack! Can you just help me up?” Ianto asked again, holding up his arms. Jack shifted position so he was in front of Ianto and aided him up.
Outside Jack stopped Ianto in the street and began inspecting the developing lump on his head.
“Ow, Jack that hurts!” Ianto hissed
“You really should get checked out” Tosh said to Ianto as she was conveniently holding him up
“I just need some rest” Ianto told her.
“Ianto you are black and blue all over, along with multiple shades of yellow. You are going to a hospital” Jack replied rather more sternly than needs be
“Jack please, just take me home” Ianto pleaded with those big eyes Jack could never refuse.
“Ianto we only care about you, is that so wrong?” Tosh asked
Ianto didn’t answer and headed towards the SUV.
Tosh was distraught by what Ianto had said, or lack thereof. Jack was hurt but tried not to show it, he was now beginning to doubt the seemingly thaw in their relationship from the other night. The pair solemnly followed after Ianto, who was now at the SUV.
“If you won’t go to a hospital, can you at least humour us and let Owen check you over?” Jack asked.
Ianto contemplated his options, “alright” he said dejectedly, with a shake of his head.
Jack opened the SUV, Ianto got in the back furthest distance between himself and Jack & Tosh. Tosh took the passenger side next to Jack.
Tosh contacted Owen to meet them at the Hub, he didn’t sound pleased but it was Owen so he was never pleased.
~…~
“Jesus!” Owen exclaimed seeing the extent of Ianto’s injuries.
“You should be in hospital mate, the best I can give you are painkillers and order bed rest” after giving Ianto the once over
“That’ll do” Ianto told him.
Tosh saw some of Ianto’s injuries but couldn’t face seeing anymore, and left the medical bay. Jack had been confined to the viewing bay by Owen for getting in his way.
“If I have to I’ll drag you there myself” Owen said in his usual bed-side manner
Ianto looked curiously at Owen, it was Owen. Owen never cares about him.
“That won’t be necessary Owen” Ianto said putting his shirt back on very gingerly indeed. Jack went to help him button it up, receiving a thankful smile off Ianto.
“Jack order him to go, he won’t otherwise” Owen said crossing his arms in a strop
“I won’t order Ianto to go Owen.”
“Fine, but if he dies don’t blame me for not trying” Owen pouted and stormed out, his ego wounded from not getting the doctor/patient fix.
Ianto rolled his eyes and Jack couldn’t help but grin mischievously.
“Lets get you home then” Jack said and helped Ianto down off the trolley.
“Thank you” Ianto winced when he put too much pressure on his leg and buckled, Jack caught him this time.
“You know people will start to talk, you falling for me” Jack smiled warmly
“I’m sure I’ll survive office gossip” Ianto smiled back
“Is there nothing I can do to make you go to a proper hospital?”
Ianto shook his head
“I could always order Tosh to drag you there, she’s stronger than Owen” Jack said
“I have no doubt…were you planning on letting me go anytime soon?” Ianto asked noticing he was still in Jack’s arms
“Nope,” Jack said and held him tighter.
“What did Owen say?” Tosh asked
 “I’m fine” Ianto said quickly
“He should be in hospital” Jack added afterwards.
“Will you go to A&E?” Tosh asked desperately
Jack looked hopefully at Ianto, “you probably won’t get seen too, there are always busy.”
“Is that the basis of your argument?” Ianto asked Jack, noticing Jack had tightened his grip again he asked “you’re not going to let me go until I agree are you?”
“I may not let you go at all”
The words terrified Ianto completely, “well I can’t go if you’re holding me” he said quickly with a big smile to hide his insecurities.
Tosh resisted the urge to hug Ianto, what with his injuries she decided to do it after he got seen too.
~…~
“Good lord what happened to you!” one of the nurses exclaimed as Ianto walked through “you look like someone’s taken a mallet to you”
Ianto stiffened instantly Jack felt it as he was holding him up.
“Any chance he can get seen to now?” Jack asked
“I’ll have to see if there is a ‘curtain’ open” she said and rushed off to check.
“Won’t get seen to huh?” Ianto drawled giving Jack a sideways glance
“Must be a slow day for accidents in Cardiff” Jack smiled back. Tosh came through the doors, “It’s a disgrace how much they charge for parking. Even the staff has to pay” she said.
“I’ll reimburse you in the next expense report” Ianto told her, Tosh wasn’t sure if he was joking or not
The nurse came back, “follow me” she said and took them to a bay for Ianto to get examined
“The doctor will be with you in a moment”
Tosh looked relieved and slumped down in the chair next to the bed. Jack stayed at Ianto’s side, a warm relaxing hand on the base of his spine.
“Hi, I’m Dr Ray” said she “so what is I can do for you-?”
“Ianto, Ianto Jones” he replied
“Ianto, do you want me to examine you privately or…”
“Oh they can stay if they want”
“I’m going to get a drink” Tosh said, excusing herself
“And you sir?” she asked Jack as Ianto unbuttoned his shirt
“It’s alright he can stay” Ianto said, Jack smirked at the doctor.
“Right lets have a look-see shall we” she said as Jack took hold of Ianto’s shirt.
“Were does it hurt?” she asked, receiving a look off Jack which she chose to ignore
“Everywhere…” Ianto smiled
“He banged his head earlier, can you check” Jack said impatiently
“Ooh, that’s nasty. Do the police know you were attacked?” she asked
Ianto looked at Jack, “yes, they do. So to speak” Jack answered
“Right…” she said suspiciously “Ianto I’d like to keep you in overnight, just as a precaution, and get a head CT, X-rays…”
“The works then?” Jack interrupted, she nodded.
“Just wait here and I’ll send a nurse to show you to a ward”
“Are there no private rooms?” Jack asked “I’ll pay”
“Who are you here exactly?” the doctor asked, sick of Jack’s attitude, which was down to concern.
“Well I’m-I’m” Jack spluttered
“He’s…he’s my Captain” Ianto answered
The answer seemed to satisfy Ray and she went off to inform the nurse.
Jack was just about to ask Ianto what he meant when Tosh pulled back the curtain
“So?”
“They’re keeping me in for the night”
~…~
“You didn’t have to do this Jack, I can be in a normal ward.” Ianto insisted as Jack fluffed the pillows behind his head.
“Only the best for you I’m afraid” Jack said in an apologetic tone “Ianto what did you mean by…”
“Got you some treats!” Tosh announced coming through the door, rubbing her hands with the alcohol rub.
Jack sighed. Fate was determined to keep him from his answer.
“Tosh you didn’t need to” Ianto said, uneasy with the attention
“Oh shush” she said sitting on the nearest chair, placing the bad on the bed.
Ianto looked at Jack and smiled
“Magazines: all the gossip ones so I want a full report when you get back to work. A few drinks and some sugary treats. Oh and a finger monster” she said putting it on her index finger making an ‘argh’ sound
Jack laughed, he loved it. Ianto found it highly amusing.
“I couldn’t resist it” Tosh said and handed it over to Ianto
“Thanks Tosh, come here” he said opening his arms Tosh couldn’t get into the hug quick enough
“Don’t ever do that again you hear me,” she sobbed “I won’t be amused if you do”
“I won’t Tosh, don’t worry” Ianto shushed her
“What about me?” Jack said like a needy child “why don’t I get any love?”
“You got plenty last night” Ianto said averting his gaze to Jack
Jack smiled at the memory “I did didn’t I…but that’s not the point” he said opening his arms, as Tosh disentwined herself from Ianto.
“Humour him Ianto, I won’t hear the end of if you don’t” Tosh said, Jack nodded his agreement
“Come on then” Ianto said
Jack threw himself as eagerly at Ianto if not more so than Tosh, and held him tightly. Jack breathed out deeply and pulled Ianto closer. Ianto did the same and closed his eyes, breathing in the scent of Jack’s coat. The both of them taking security in each others embrace.
~…~
“Sir visiting hours finished ten minutes ago, you really must leave” the nurse told Jack as checked in on Ianto
“But can’t I just stay, no one will know. You wouldn’t tell anyone will you?” Jack smiled back, using his most dashing smile possible
“I’m sorry sir hospital policy”
“Jack, you have to go”
“But I don’t want to.” Jack said pouting “I want to stay here and make sure you’re ok”
“I can assure you I’ll be getting the most perfect care available” Ianto said
“It’s not enough” Jack said, digging his heels in
“Sir if you don’t leave I’ll have to call security”
“Are they cute?” Jack asked, getting an eye roll
“Sir, you can have five more minutes, if you’re not out after that I’ll call for security” the nurse warned as he left the room
“Hospital staff, you don’t want to get them angry.” Ianto mused
“Ianto…what did -what did you mean earlier when you said that I was your Captain”
“I…I erm, well I just…” Ianto spluttered “I’m…I’m not sure” Ianto cringed, screwing up his eyes as to not see the look of disappointment, or whatever else that may be on Jack’s face.
Ianto opened one eye after what felt like an hour of waiting, in fact it had only been around seven seconds. He scanned the room for Jack, seeing no-one he opened his other eye and surveyed the room.
“Over here” Jack said softly by the window
“I thought you’d left” Ianto said, trying to calm his breathing
“I’m sorry I put you here” Jack said his voice full of compassion
“Jack, you didn’t it was…”
“I know, but I shouldn’t have taken you, or anyone. We shouldn’t have gone”
“You say that now, but what happens in a decade’s time when more people go missing? You can’t blame yourself. It happened. Its bad, but I’ll learn to cope with it”
“You shouldn’t have to”
“Jack, come here” Ianto said opening his arms once again, Jack moved towards him and lay on the bed next to him, in his arms “we’ve been over this. You are not to blame for any of this. Do you hear me? None of it.”
“But what if…?”
“No ‘if’s Jack. We’re both here, and life goes on.”
“Ok” Jack mumbled against Ianto’s medical gown glad chest.
“Promise me one thing, if only for tonight.”
“What?” Jack asked weakly
“You won’t stay in the Hub, you need people Jack as much as we need you.”
“Where would I go?”
“I’m sure Tosh wouldn’t mind a friendly face”
“Not going to palm me off on Owen?” Jack grinned
“Would I be that cruel to you?”
“No but you would be to him”
“Yes but that’s another matter. Do you promise me?”
“…I promise” Jack said getting very comfortable where he lay
The nurse stuck his head around the door.
“Sir! I do insist you leave immediately”
Jack sighed and muttered something under his breath, as he got up, making Ianto laugh. Jack kissed his forehead, then nose then lips.
“See you soon ok”
“You’d better” Ianto replied back as Jack as all but dragged from the room
“Bright and early! I’ll bring coffee” Jack called as the nurse shut the door.
Ianto sighed and looked around…alone once again with the shadows.
~…~
Outside the hospital Jack sighed deeply as he lent up against the wall. He didn’t want to leave Ianto, turning on his headpiece he contacted Tosh.
“Hi Tosh it’s me, are you busy?”
“No I was just reading, why?”
“I sort of promised Ianto I would go and see you tonight”
“Well come round,” Tosh said enthusiastically
“Do you mind?”
“Of course not. I’ll see you soon” Tosh said and disconnected the line
~…~
“Hi, come on in” Tosh said opening the door
“Hey Tosh how are you” Jack asked hugging her
“Oh you know me same old same old” she smiled “how’s Ianto?”
“He’s…he’s better, they gave him some pain killers and put an IV in just in case.”
“Oh Jack he’ll be alright” Tosh said, seeing the distress in his eyes.
“I know, it’s just I don’t want to leave him alone Tosh, I mean he had it worse than any one of us…”
“I know”
“And now he’s all alone. I just want to help him”
“Well why don’t we?” Tosh said with her devious smirk, very few had the opportunity to see
“Why do I sense you already have a fool proof plan?”
“Me?! Never” Tosh said in mock indignation
~…~
“You want us to break into a hospital?” Jack said in a blunt tone standing outside the entrance with Tosh
“We aren’t breaking in exactly, we will use the entrance”
Jack just looked at her.
“Look we just put these on and walk in” Tosh said holding up two medallion type alien devices.
“You do know Ianto isn’t going to be happy you rooted around in the archives for those don’t you?”
Tosh shrugged and slipped her device on, Jack followed suit.
The pair waltzed their merry way to Ianto’s room, using the hand disinfectant as they went.
Creeping into Ianto’s room the pair took off their tech. Ianto was wide awake, legs pulled up to his chest.
“Ianto, it’s us” Tosh said quietly “Ianto are you alright?” she asked (even though it was a stupid question if she had to admit it)
“Guess I’m not as strong as I thought” Ianto replied bleakly “…I’m scared” he shrugged slightly.
Tosh looked at Jack, tears already in her eyes.
“You promised you’d stay at Tosh’s tonight” Ianto said changing the subject as he looked at Jack.
“Yes, well we had other plans” Jack said, suddenly nervous.
“We came to see you” Tosh said
“Visiting hours are over” Ianto said and subtly smirked at Jack
“Since when has a minor thing like that stopped us?” Tosh said with a wave of her hand and took a seat next to Ianto
“You two really should go” Ianto told them as Jack stood at the head of the bed
“I’m not leaving you tonight” Jack told him and ran his hand down Ianto’s hair
Ianto smiled back weakly.
“What no coffee?” he asked
“It’s not ‘bright and early’” Jack smiled and sat down on the bed
“You two should go, its better if you do” Ianto said quickly as a shadow past under the door
“Why? What’s the worst that can happen, we’ll get kicked out” Jack asked
“I may not want to be alone, but I have to be.” Ianto said looking at Jack with pleading eyes
“Why?” Tosh coaxed
“Because if I’m not alone tonight…then I won’t know if, if I can be.”
“They’re not coming back” Jack said holding Ianto’s hand reassuringly
“I know, the rational side of me knows that, but the emotionally damaged side of me doesn’t. I have to be alone, if I’m going to stand a chance of getting past this.”
“Do you want us to go?” Tosh asked,
Ianto shook his head gently and bit his lower lip.
“Then we’re staying” Jack said taking his coat off
“Jack you can’t-”
“I can and I am.” Jack said taking a seat on the bed as close to Ianto as possible
“Jack, please, you have to go”
“But you don’t want me…us to”
“It’s not up for debate Jack, I’m touched by the gesture but you both need to go”
Tosh nodded her head, understanding his need.
“Come on Jack,” Tosh said “we’ll see you tomorrow” she said kissing Ianto’s cheek
“Goodnight Tosh” Ianto replied, he turned to Jack.
“I’ll see you outside” Tosh said to Jack as she left
“Don’t make me go” Jack pleaded
“This has to be done, it’s for the best”
“Are you sure, one iota of doubt and I’m not going anywhere, even if I have to handcuff myself to you”
“Don’t tempt me. I’m sure Jack.”
Jack hugged him goodbye again, keeping the embrace going for as long as possible, which to Jack would have been all night if he could. They breathed in tandem, tightening each others embrace as the other did. Neither wanted to let go, but knew they must.
“I’ll see you soon ok,” Jack said after lightly kissing Ianto on the lips and rested their foreheads together “now a very serious question: what do you want for breakfast?”
Ianto chuckled, so did Jack.
“Goodnight Jack” Ianto said, almost a whisper
“goodnight Ianto” Jack replied as he got up, Ianto leaned over to get him his coat “no,” Jack said catching his hand “you keep it tonight” Jack said placing a kiss on Ianto’s bruised knuckles.
“Thank you” Ianto said, his voice breaking
Jack put the medallion piece of tech back on and left the room.
“Ready?” Tosh asked, Jack nodded his reply, “come on, there’s a spare room you can sleep in tonight” Tosh said leading Jack away.
Ianto touched Jacks coat lightly, letting his fingers play over the fabric, it was just a coat but was so much more when Jack put it on. It was a part of Jack, and now he had it.Ianto pulled the coat up to him, it was still warm, and breathed in the scent of his captain.
