Prologue |
---
The curls of silvery smoke rises from the mocha latte like ribbons twisting in the air and Heechul stares at it, slowly drifting in a trance.
He’s starts to recall the flashback images of his mother’s Bori Cha and the addictive scent of the hot beverage -- its smoke curls just like this, so mesmerizing - he is almost entranced as he observes the way they disappear and fade without a single trace into the air.
It’s this moment that Hangeng walks in, a hand holding a fluffy towel, ruffling his hair dry.
He’s clad in nothing but another towel wrapped around his waist. There is still a streak of water from the shower that has managed to escape Hangeng’s notice and is glittering in the light off of his abdomen. Hangeng walks toward Heechul, offering a small smile.
That drop of water is probably the most distracting thing Heechul has ever tried to deal with.
“Hey,” he says, breaking the silence and Heechul grunts in return, stuffing his half eaten sandwich into his mouth. He’s not really a morning person after all.
He stares at the way Hangeng’s body moves as he makes his way over to the kitchen, muscles perfectly toned and everything just the perfect proportion.
As Hangeng brews his own cup of coffee, Heechul sneaks another glance at his biceps and quickly looks away before he gets caught. He feels himself turn warm-warm, like the feeling that he gets when Hangeng’s eyes smile at him.
The next couple minutes are filled with a slow silence and Heechul types something up on his keyboard, albeit nothing to add to anything relevant at all.
“Hankyung,” he begins, trying hard to not glance away from the computer screen because he knows he’ll get distracted again. He senses Hangeng looking up from the corner in the kitchen.
“Yeah?” asks Hangeng, his interest slowly climbing at how weird Heechul is being -- all quiet and stoic unlike his usual lively self.
“When did you fall in love with me?” Heechul says suddenly, sipping his drink slowly as if it’s the most casual question in the world.
The hot liquid burns his throat but he doesn’t seem to notice as his heart flutters hopelessly against his ribcage.
Hangeng’s interest is piqued now.
“What do you mean?” he asks, eyebrows raised.
Heechul sighs and rubs his forehead.
“I mean....when did you find out you were in love with me?” he explains. He tries to mask the curiosity flickering across his features by staring at the elaborate swirls in his latte.
Hangeng pauses for moment to register the question in his mind. He blinks at Heechul, “When?”
“Yeah.”
“When that guy made fun of your hair and you told him you’d shove a cake mixer up his ass,” Hangeng replies after a moment, his eyes are lighting up and a smile tugs at the corner of his lips.
Heechul stares at the Chinaman for a moment.
“I was being serious,” he replies, eyes narrowing.
“So was I,” Hangeng says, turning away to add sugar and cream to his coffee.
“Really? Wasn’t it when you found me all vulnerable crying in the girl’s bathroom after Siwon rejected me?”
Hangeng laughs now -- a carefree, tinkling laugh and Heechul relishes the moment, so refreshing to his morning, it makes him feel a decade younger.
“Why would you think that?” Hangeng says, still chuckling.
“Because....” Heechul begins, “Guys tend to like it when their lovers act weak and vulnerable so they can protect them or whatever.” He shudders. He hates being weak and helpless in any kind of situation.
“Where did you come up with that, Heechul?” Hangeng asks again, laughing because he’s incredulous. “Honestly, the ideas that go through your head, I don’t even know what to make of them sometimes.”
Heechul snorts and takes another sip from his coffee.
“Well to answer your question: No, I didn’t fall in love with your weak, helpless side that needed protection. I fell in love with the witty, sarcastic, mean side of you that is strong; I know that you’ll always be able to stand up for yourself. I need my partner to be daring and capable of defending himself. That’s exactly the way you are and that’s exactly what I’ve always been looking for. You are perfect. You are confident and beautiful and strong and I could not ask of anything more. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t be there for you when you need me, because it’s my job during all the ups and downs to always remain by your side,” Hangeng pauses for a moment and stares intensely back at Heechul, his face alight with something new, “So does that answer your question?”
Heechul nods meekly, eyes watering up a bit now. He tries to hide his face and shuts up, turning away. It takes a lot to shut Kim Heechul up.
Yes, yes, he has fallen just a little harder.

A/N: how was the first chapter so far? feedback ♥
also, sorry that it's not the same rhythm/tone as the prologue. Those kinds of tones I usually only use for prologues and one-shots. It's hard to keep such a style throughout a 50K word fic XD . Since there is actual present action and dialogue, it's hard to keep it that way. I hope you understand and aren't disappointed~
