Day 26: Two Characters You Wanted To Get Together That Never Did

Hmm. A lot of the joy of my ships on The West Wing is the way they all exist somewhere just outside canon. There are very few overt romantic relationships, compared to many, many covert ones. You have couples like Jed/Leo or Sam/Josh, that aren't actually couples but are genuinely loving within canon. You have couples like CJ/Toby or Kate/Will, who have a relationship but without ever showing any of it beyond flirting or flashbacks. The West Wing is a show that tells you characters have slept together rather than including it onscreen...so it can be hard to decide what counts as "never getting together."

For example, I love Annabeth and Leo. They are adorable, likely because the actors were good friends offscreen. But I liked them as they were--I can't say that I wanted their relationship to be different onscreen than it was. I feel the same way about CJ/Toby. The beauty of their ship lied in its tragedy as much as everything else, so mostly I wish that we could've seen them before they worked together on the campaign. It's weird for me to ship a pairing so hard in which the characters have never even kissed onscreen. It wouldn't have fit in their relationship as it was, but a flashback would have made me happy. I think that in seven seasons the only person Toby ever kisses is Andy, and she's mean to him, so yeah.

There are some slash pairings that are so far outside canon I can't say I wanted them to get together, exactly, but that I could totally see enjoying if they had. :) Kate/Donna makes sense in a way, as does Donna/Amy, strictly because Donna's involvement in Josh/Amy in canon is bizarre. A surprising number of people ship CJ/Abbey, which I don't exactly understand but kind of do.

However, there are only two couples I can think of that fit this meme in my interpretation. First, there's Toby and Tabitha, because seeing him get a real chance with her would have been delightful.

And second and most important, Sam and Ainsley. It's possible something happened between them offscreen, as is possible for most ships on TWW, but nothing did visibly, and that was a shame. Sam deserved a viable love interest and Ainsley could have been around more if they'd been actually dating.

And...a couple of icons! They're not that good, but they are Sam/Ainsley, cuz I should have really made Sam/Ainsley icons already. :)

Thanks for reading. :)

See you tomorrow for Day 27!
