i've been googling "columbia S&M" and similar search terms to see what folks have been saying about us. i am astounded at the level of hatred - lazy hatred - of which humanity can be capable ( Read more... )

After seeing the Fox piece and then reading the news article (after your post tipped me off to it!) I think I spent about an hour composing scathing-yet-political-and-reasonable-sounding statements with which to respond. Venting anger but only using the best words in a way that any half way reasonable and not amazingly conservative person would only respond with "Wow, Coulter is an ass".

I think we should talk about this at CV.. I do also think though, after doing the same thing you have (I have google alerts on Columbia S&M, Conversio Virium, "Ivy Gone Wild" etc.) that responding would actually be a bad idea, for CV.

This whole thing thankfully never managed to explode much beyond one Fox newscast, and blog/news coverage is already starting to die down. The only real chance it has to flare up again is if more media-fuel is provided in the form of anything-- a statement, a protest. I feel lucky that the administration has (as far as I know) not considered this news coverage, so far, to be anything worth acting on. The University has taken a very active stance on free speech recently--in defense of conservatives, with the Minuteman 'scandal'--and that helps us out. And their statement was very supportive. But we do go a little bit further at many of our meetings than just words and speech. I think that consensual whippings are covered under freedom of expression but some dean might not agree, and it would not be hard to reignite a survival fight for CV as a recognized group.

Google tells me its been almost 24 hours since new blog or news content has been posted (although I'm sure people are still commenting). The video itself is no longer linked on Fox's main page or video page. The last post I found was on Bwog.net, where there are I think two entries about the whole thing, both of which only have super-positive comments about CV and Columbia and say some of the funniest stuff I've read about Coulter.

Anyway. After being spotlighted like that, I really do think you deserve your 15 minutes to devastate Coulter and defend yourself and our group. I just think CV making any type of official statement is a bad idea.

But we should all talk about it at the next meeting. And one thing I think we should *definitely* do is start considering what steps we can take to make it harder for reporters to get access to meetings that are supposed to be CONFIDENTIAL (as in, WTF?!, reporter).

i don't actually want my 15 minutes - i swear i was just dreaming.
and CV is addressing the reporter-invasion thing.
and what kills me is that i probably can't make it on monday. arg.

I agree that responding would be a bad idea.

This is, I think, the third or fourth 'media expose' that I've heard about CV. All off them vanished at the end of a news cycle. Unlike the WAP controvesry, there isn't a story here.

Curiously, I think this actually strengthens CVs position with the adminstration. CV does have opposition, but the ones I've run into would never be caught dead on the same side of the issue as Ann Coulter.
