The next morning Jacquelyn woke abruptly.  Her cell phone was blaring “Me and My Gang” by Rascal Flatts, which could only mean one thing.

“What do you want Kait?”

“Don’t make any plans for tonight we’re all going out” Kaitlin nearly squealed.

“Okay,” Jacquelyn replied yawning, “but did you have to call me so early to tell me this?”

“Early? It’s one o’ clock.”

“No, its not.”

“Yes, it is Jac.  Buy a watch or something.”  Jacquelyn pulled the phone away from her ear and opened her eyes to read the time.

“Damn.  Why was I still sleeping?  I went to sleep early last night.”

“Well, you had to deal with all you’re relatives yesterday and I’m sure you ate a ton of turkey.”

“Oh shut up,” Jacquelyn laughed.

“Either way you’re going to be well rested for tonight!”

“Yeah, what time are we going?” Jacquelyn questioned.

“Hayley and I will be at your house around eight thirty to get ready and I told the boys we’d pick them up around ten.”

“Sounds good,” Jacquelyn paused, “as long as I’m not the DD.”

“Don’t worry Hayley already told Alex it was his turn to drive.”

“Okay good, well I should probably get up so I’ll see you later.”

“Bye Jac.” Kaitlin replied before ending the phone call.  Jacquelyn reluctantly rolled out of her bed and headed towards the bathroom to shower.  Her father greeted her when she entered the hallway.

“Good morning sleeping beauty,” he laughed.

“You’re so funny dad,” Jacquelyn replied shaking her head.  “Oh, the girls are coming over tonight to get ready.  We’re going out and Alex is driving.”

“Okay, I’ll warn your mother.” He yelled from the bottom of the stairs.

Jacquelyn spent the rest of the day just lounging around the house.  Hayley and Kaitlin showed up a little earlier than planned.

“Jac!” Kaitlin yelled as she walked into the Taylor household.

“You’re two favorite people are here,” Hayley announced as they walked into the living room where Jacquelyn was watching television.

“Hey,” Jacquelyn answered climbing out of the chair, “Why don’t we go upstairs and start getting ready since we’re never on time for anything.”

“Sounds good,” Hayley laughed, “So what are we going to do with you’re hair Jac?”

“Absolutely nothing,” she replied walking into her room, “last time you touched my hair I had to go to the salon the next day to get it fixed.”

“Oh quit exaggerating,” Kaitlin quipped, “I need to shower so I’ll be in your room in a couple.” When Jacquelyn walked into her room she quickly moved her guitar from her bed to its stand next to her desk, providing Hayley with somewhere to sit.

“Thanks,” Hayley said before flopping down on her best friend’s bed.  “Now what are you going to wear tonight?”

“I don’t know does it really matter?”

“Of course it matters!” Hayley exclaimed, “now sit I’ll find you an outfit.”

“Yes ma’am,” Jacquelyn replied sarcastically.

“Oh, hush,” Hayley muttered as she searched Jacquelyn’s closet for the perfect outfit.  Jacquelyn flopped onto her bed and ignored Hayley’s muttering.  “Ooh!” Hayley shrieked.

“What did you find?” Jacquelyn asked her words muffled by the pillow she was laying on.

“You’ll see,” Hayley replied.  Jacquelyn lifted her head from the pillow and tried to see what Hayley was holding in her hand but it was blocked by the closet door.

“Why does what I wear matter so much tonight?”

“It always does.”

“Whatever you say,” Jacquelyn said shaking her head.  Hayley quickly found the rest of Jacquelyn’s outfit.  After setting it on the bed she continued to search for her outfit.  By the time Kaitlin entered the room Hayley was already dressed in her dark blue jeans, a red low cut v-neck spaghetti strap top which she borrowed from Jacquelyn and black high heels.

“Ooh, someone’s dressed to kill,” Kaitlin laughed as she walked into the room.

“You know it,” Hayley replied before plugging in her curling iron so she could emphasize some of her curls.  “Jac, are you gonna get up or dressed anytime soon?”

“Last I checked I was still dressed.”

“Smart ass,” Kaitlin and Hayley muttered simultaneously.

“And yes I’ll get up in a couple minutes.”

“Good,” Hayley answered beginning to curl select strands of hair and then pinning the front strands back so just a few curls framed her face.  While Hayley finished doing her hair Kaitlin got dressed in her black pants, a metallic silver halter top with a draped neckline, and black flats.

“Kait,” Hayley began calmly, “when are you going to let me borrow that top?” she almost shrieked.

“Sometime when I’m not wearing it,” Kaitlin smiled while putting her silver hoop earrings on.  “Are you almost done with the curling iron?”

“Just finished,” Hayley replied as she pinned the last curl in place.

“Good,” Kaitlin remarked unplugging Hayley’s curling iron and plugging in her hair straightener.  She impatiently tapped her foot waiting for the flat iron to heat up before quickly running it through her already straight hair.  “Yes, I know my hair is already straight,” she answered Hayley before she could ask like usual; “it makes my highlights stand out more.”

“Whatever you say, Blondie,” Hayley giggled running out of the room before Kaitlin could retaliate.  Kaitlin laughed as she poked Jacquelyn.

“Are you going to get up?”

“Mhmm,” Jacquelyn mumbled into the pillow.

“We’re almost ready, we just have to do our make up and if you don’t get up we’re going to start on you.”

“I’m up, I’m up,” Jacquelyn declared suddenly wide awake, I don’t need any of your help.  Last time was bad enough.”

“Bad?  Last time wasn’t bad at all”

“Are you kidding me?  I was dressed like the biggest slut and the only guys that came anywhere near me that night were the ones no one wants coming near them.”

“I’m sorry,” Kaitlin shrugged, “Your outfit isn’t slutty this time, so you should at least let us do your make up.”

“I’ll think about it,” She replied glancing at the clothes laid out next to her for the first time.  Kaitlin was right they were clothes she might have picked out herself.  She shook her head when the thought crossed her mind, of course she wouldn’t have picked them she always tries to blend in.  Wearing a pastel orange tube top would be the farthest thing from blending in.

“Earth to Jac? Are you in there?” Kaitlin asked waving her hand back and forth in front of her best friend’s face, “You okay?  You spaced.”

“I was just thinking, I guess.”

“Okay,” Kaitlin eyed her suspiciously, “you’ve got to start getting ready though we’re meeting the boys in like forty-five minutes.”

“Okay.”  Jacquelyn stood up and stretched trying to shake of her tiredness.  Picking up her clothes she walked to the bathroom so she could change and brush her teeth.  She passed Hayley, who was sitting in the hallway petting Bailey, and laughed.  Hayley poked her head into Jacquelyn’s room a couple minutes later.

“Is it safe to come in yet?  I need a mirror to do my make up”

“Why do you need make up, you’re the one with a boyfriend.  Yes, it’s safe.” Kaitlin laughed quietly.

“I do like to look pretty for my boyfriend,” Hayley responded sitting down in front of the mirror.

“You know he would still think you’re absolutely gorgeous if you wore sweats all the time.  I know too because he’s told me like a billion times.”

“Oh shut up,” Hayley blushed, “I can still get dressed up though.  I’m sure Alex doesn’t mind.”  The girls finished getting ready in silence with the radio on a local top forty station in the background.  “Where’s Jacquelyn?  Did she fall in the toilet or something?” She asked as Jacquelyn walked into the room.

“No I didn’t fall in the toilet,” she remarked sarcastically.

“Jac you look so pretty!” Kaitlin shrieked.

“Thanks,” Jacquelyn said quietly while looking at herself in the mirror.  She didn’t see what was so pretty.  She thought her dark blue jeans, pastel orange tube top, and matching flip flops were cute.  While she was in the bathroom she had curled her hair, which now fell a few inches above her shoulders.  She thought her hair looked nice curled, but nothing spectacular.  She shrugged and turned to her friends, “you can do my make up I guess.”

“Yay!” They both yelled.  Jacquelyn just rolled her eyes and sat down on her bed waiting for the madness to begin.  It took a few minutes because both Hayley and Kaitlin had to put the finishing touches on their make up.  For Kaitlin that was her signature pink lip gloss.  She never wore a ton of make up only a little concealer if she needed it, some bronzer, black eyeliner and mascara.  Hayley liked to wear more make up when she went out because she rarely wore any make up otherwise.  Tonight she decided on the smoky eye with dark eye shadow along with red lip gloss and a little blush.

Jacquelyn sat on the bed anxiously waiting to see what she was going to end up looking like tonight.  The only time she ever cared about what she looked like was when she was going out with Hayley and Kaitlin.  No matter how hard they tried they simply couldn’t convince Jacquelyn she was just as pretty, if not prettier, as they are.  Kaitlin and Hayley didn’t really understand what had brought around this change in their friend.  In high school she had been just as outgoing as they had.  She always wanted to dress up when they went out.  Now it was almost the complete opposite.  They noticed things started to change when she started dating Aaron from her school.  Jacquelyn and Aaron had broken up at the end of spring semester, but Jacquelyn still wasn’t back to her old self.

Jacquelyn spared them the details of what happened between her and Aaron.  She couldn’t figure out how she let it get so bad and she didn’t want her friends to worry about what was in the past now.  The only one in their group who knew was Drew.  That was because they attended Oklahoma State University together and he was the person she called when she needed a shoulder to cry on.  Jacquelyn hated bringing it up with Drew now because she could see that he was still worried about her and she didn’t want him to worry anymore, he had done enough of that in the year and a half that she dated Aaron.

“We’re done!” Hayley said shaking Jacquelyn from her thoughts.  “Go look,” Hayley said curious to see what her friend thought.  Jacquelyn was surprised to see a toned down version of Hayley’s smoky eye, except with a golden brown eye shadow, a little blush and her favorite pink lip gloss.

“Thanks guys,” she smiled, “it looks great.”  The trio quickly cleaned up Jacquelyn’s room.  As they were leaving the house there was a chorus of goodbyes directed at Jacquelyn’s parents.  Jacquelyn had told her parents earlier that they would be staying at Alex’s for the night since he was driving.  The girls piled into Hayley’s mustang and were off to Alex’s house.
