Jacquelyn was greeted with the smell of a turkey in the oven when she awoke the next morning. She stretched her arms out bumping into the lamp on the stand next to the couch. A confused look graced Jacquelyn’s face as she opened her eyes and realized she wasn’t in her bed. The events of the night before quickly flooded back to her, tossing aside the blanket Jacquelyn made her way up to her sister’s room. She gently knocked on the door before entering the room. She was greeted by their black lab, Bailey, as she trotted over to Jacquelyn waiting to be pet. Jacquelyn scratched behind Bailey’s ear before the dog wandered out of the room. Erin was still sleeping, but Jacquelyn decided she needed to be woken up. She had learned many years ago that the best way to go about doing this was to jump on the foot of the bed. Erin was vicious when she was woken up and being at the foot of the bed usually kept Jacquelyn out of harm’s way. As Jacquelyn began jumping on the bed Erin slowly came to.
“What the hell Jac?” Erin mumbled.
“Time to get up, it’s Thanksgiving and people are going to be here in like four hours which means Mom is going to start her cleaning in about 20 minutes. You know she’ll recruit us to help.”
“Ugh. Do I really have to get up? It’s only 8.”
“Yes, you do,” Jacquelyn replied a smile spreading across her face, “and I’m getting the first shower.” She finished before leaving the room.
“Whatever,” Erin sighed as she rolled out of her bed.
“Oh,” Jacquelyn said poking her head back in the room, “we have to talk later, after everyone leaves though.”
“Okay,” Erin said not entirely sure what they had to talk about.
Jacquelyn and Erin were in the kitchen cleaning up when the last guest, their grandmother, left.
“Thank goodness,” Jacquelyn sighed.
“You’re telling me,” Erin replied putting away the last dish. After a long day filled with food and relatives both girls were exhausted.
“How do sundaes and a movie sound to you?”
“Ugh, I don’t know about sundaes I’m really full.”
“You know you can’t turn down vanilla ice cream and hot fudge. Why don’t you go pick out a movie and we’ll watch it in your room this time.”
“Okay, my room in five and don’t forget the ice cream.” Erin laughed as she walked up stairs.
Ten minutes later Jacquelyn found her way into Erin’s bedroom; her hands full with two bowls of vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate syrup and whipped cream.
“So what are we watching tonight?” Jacquelyn asked.
“I couldn’t decide between The Notebook and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. So you pick.”
“Definitely the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants you know I don’t like The Notebook much.” Jacquelyn answered while situating herself on the bed. Erin put in the DVD and grabbed the remote off her TV stand before joining her sister on the bed.
“Thanks for the ice cream,” Erin said with a mouthful of ice cream, chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Jacquelyn just laughed and started the movie. The girls enjoyed the first half hour of the movie and their ice cream in silence. Once the ice cream was finished the girl talk ensued.
“So,” Jacquelyn began, “how was your date last night?”
“It was fantastic,” Erin answered as a smile spread across her face. “Jake is such a sweetheart. I wish you would have been here when he picked me up so you could have met him.”
“Yeah, but hearing dad’s new boyfriend speech another time could have made me crazy. I’m sure I’ll meet him over Christmas break if he’s as great as you make him seem.”
“Hopefully,” Erin replied, “where did you go last night?”
“Kaitlin and I went to DJ’s. What about you?”
“We went to DJ’s too,” Erin paused, “but you knew that already didn’t you?” She finished eyeing her sister.
“Yeah, I did. We saw you on our way out.”
“And you didn’t say hi because?”
“You guys were busy.”
“Oh,” Erin giggled as she realized what her sister was hinting at, “Yeah I guess we were.”
“Just be careful, okay?”
“I will be. Why are you so anti-guy lately?”
“I’m not anti-guy,” Jacquelyn replied using air quotes around her sister’s words.
“Well then what is it? You haven’t had a boyfriend in forever and that’s so not like you. Ever since you were allowed to date it was one guy right after the next.”
“Yeah, I know but did that do me any good? I never dated a nice guy when I was going from one guy right to the next. I’ve just needed some time for myself. I want to make sure I find a nice guy but I haven’t met anyone who’s caught my attention and who is a genuinely nice guy.”
“I think you’re not telling me everything, but I’m sure you have a good reason. I know you’ll find a nice guy soon. What I really don’t get is why you seem so against me dating Jake.”
“I’ve dated so many guys like Jake and I know what they’re capable of. I just don’t want anything to happen to you.”
“What do you mean like Jake? He’s not the stereotypical popular jock. He’s a really nice guy and I wish you’d at least wait until after you meet him before deciding what you think about him.”
“Okay, I’ll do that. Just promise me you’ll be careful.”
“I will I always am.”
“Good,” Jacquelyn replied before both girls turned their attention to the remainder of the movie. Jacquelyn stood up after the credits finished rolling across the screen. “Goodnight,” she yawned.
“Goodnight,” Erin replied as Jacquelyn left the room. Seconds later Erin realized Jacquelyn had left her ice cream bowl in the room. Erin shook her head and laughed as she picked up the bowls and brought them downstairs. After changing into her warm pajamas Jacquelyn climbed under her comforter and easily fell asleep.
