I visited my aunt in east TX this wkend.
Her home sits on 7 acres.
Facing the most beautiful Sycamore tree.
She's selling it ~ the house ~ not the tree. ;)
Her final essay before graduating this wkend was on Walden (I believe).
She realized her property ~ altho it holds so many memories ~ owns her.
So we built a bonfire, roasted marshmallows,
and sketched her favorite tree.
We both naively agreed that it must have stood during the Civil War.
This was for her.
We're more like sisters ~ close in age.
My grandmother raised us together.
She's the tomboy, I'm not (sometimes) but we share a love for words.
We used to go honky-tonkin' across the state line (Arkansas),
but we opted for a bottle of Baileys,
got in our flannels (granny panties and all),
crawled under the covers,
and she read me limmericks.
At least we weren't hung over and
smelling like rednecks Sunday morning!

I've never been to your state. The closest I got was Louisiana. Thank you for the lovely visit to your aunt's East Texas (granny panties and all). I'm a big fan of the South, because I'm a Southerner, too. "Y'all" is "Tu tutti" in Sicilian.

Now Louisiana is like it's own Southern subculture altogether! Those cajuns don't mess around! ;)
I think they'd match a Sicilian any day! haha!

On a different note ~ would you believe we watched the Godfather last night for the first time ever! Now I understand how that movie has stood the test of time. I'm hooked. Up tonight: Part II. I must say, for its time, I thought it was really violent. A horse head in that guy's bed?? That freaked me out worse than anything I've seen in 2004!

New Orleans has a large Sicilian population going back to the late 19th century. It was also the site of the worst lynching in US history in 1891. If Interested, the 1977 book "Vendetta" by Richard Gambino gives a thorough account. Avoid the Christopher Walken film of the same name, not good, and was shot in Toronto, instead of New Orleans ( ... )
