New Orleans has a large Sicilian population going back to the late 19th century. It was also the site of the worst lynching in US history in 1891. If Interested, the 1977 book "Vendetta" by Richard Gambino gives a thorough account. Avoid the Christopher Walken film of the same name, not good, and was shot in Toronto, instead of New Orleans!
Godfather II is an even better film than Godfather I, which is great. III is worth seeing, but doesn't quite live up to the first two - despite my emotional reaction to the film - its music (the Mascagni opera) was incredibly evocative. Expect more violence, they're the Mob after all.
BTW, as much as I enjoy the Godfather films, I never forget to remind my friends that there is no "honor" in the mafia. It is an abberation, a perversion of the "family." Being originally from Sicily, and having had some dealings (above-the-board) with these types, has strengthened the notion of their evil ways. All that being said, the Godfather is endlessly interesting, emotionaly-involving and, dare I say it, fun to watch.
