Shawn and I were inspired to go up to the Woodland Park Zoo, thanks to the recent work he did on one of their boilers for work (the Big Kitties and the Dragons must be kept warm!). He hasn't been for a few years, and I've not been at all. Last time I went to a zoo was back in Ye Olde Collegiate Years, and my parents and I went to Point Defiance. Woodland Park was very nice, but we only had time to see about half of it in 4 hours! Still managed to take about 100 pictures, though! Prepare thyself (and hope you don't have dial-up!).
We started off with mostly birds, so I'll do the same here, giving you animals more categorically than chronologically. :)
BIRDS
Flamingos are more interesting when they are not plastic and in someone's front yard!
Mister Mallard!
Naptime.
This bird paddled around and gave us the evil eye, haha.
If you look closely (sorry it's blurry!), you can see the blue bill!
Totally looks like it has a mohawk. Awesome, dude!
I don't know why, but the birds at this pond (the Conservation Aviatary) came out REALLY blurry. Argh!
Birdies got boot-ays!
We saw a gyrfalcon being excercised! She was very pretty, and very FAST!
Here is the gyrfalcon being paraded around to be admired.
They also had a peregrine falcon out for fresh air.
A Something Peacock (I forget the breed), but it was an awesome looking bird!
Here she is, preening.
A starling from East Africa, one of the most beautiful birds in the world.
A Hornbill, an endangered species. It was hard to see the animals in captivity like this, but it was even sadder to see how many had to be breed in captivity because their habitats had been virtually destroyed (some as much as 80-90% of their original range!).
Two different types of White Cranes (I'm a little vague on every breed, should have written it down!)
BUGS
Yay... cockroach!
In order to prepare you for what's coming next...
...A Golden Orb Weaver.
Holy hairy legs, Spiderman!
OMG, it's Shelob!
They had a "Spider Court of Justice," to determine if the common house spider is just an intruder, breaking & entering, or if there was intent to harm. We all know what I think of spiders in my living space!
Flamboyant Flower Beetle.
Leafy bugs. HUGE.
A White-Eyed Beetle.
A "Lady Bug," get it? AHAHAHA.
OTHER ANIMALS
Yes, I should have put the Peacock in with the other birds, but I wanted to show him off separately!
My witch hat this year has Peacock feathers on it, so we've got something in common!
Helloooo, big kitty!
Sleepy Tiger is Sleepy!
Kinda blurry, but I *DID* promise you lions, tigers, and bears!
Komodo Dragon
Wild African Painted Dogs
Japanese Goat
Panda Cattle
NOM NOM NOM
Fat Goat is Fat!
Pygmy African Goat
I totally didn't realize that I was doing this right over the "DO NOT FEED" sign. There were just a few wisps of hay on the ground, and someone else picked some up to give, and well... I'm a follower!
Pygmy Horse.
Termite Hill
Zebra & Oryx
What's black and white and read all over?
Question: Which has more bones in its neck, a human or a giraffe? (*Answer below)
Answer: Trick question! They have the same number of bones in the neck!
These came out a little blurry as well, since I was shooting into the sun. Oh well!
POTPOURRI
Other assorted pictures of the day - the two of us, plants, pumpkins, etc.
WPZ has a Pumpkin Prowl for the kiddies, so they had carved pumpkins ALL OVER the place!
Fall Foliage!
I have no idea what this plant was, but I liked the purple berries!
Isn't he handsome?!
Oh, Leo!
Have a good week, my dears!
