She wants a little bit of earth, She'll plant some seeds. The seeds will grow, the flowers bloom.

There is nothing like working with the earth, even if it's just in a couple of 6" pots!

I planted my four primroses today (a white, a yellow, a red/yellow and a purple/yellow) in 3 pots. With my purple pansies, pinkish heather and rosemary, I am growing a nice little "garden" on my patio. Although my neighbor's is REALLY impressive, with a huge rosemary bush, a tomato plant, some ferny things and some pretty flowers, among others. Although, I have to admit, trying to walk through that little Garden of Eden with 3 grocery bags hanging off each arm is NOT always so much fun, haha.

Inside, I am growing an air plant and my little succulents arrangement. My bamboo was utterly shot, and in the space of the past year I managed to kill off ivy, jade, and African violets. So, I'm backing off, and doing things in baby steps, because I think I was just too ambitious (but I do think the bamboo was just OLD and worn out. I'll start fresh later this year, and try it again).

I have been able to keep the pansies, heather and rosemary alive from last fall to now, so there's improvement there. I should really name my plants, yes? My bamboo plants were Bam-bam and Boo-boo (get it?), so I feel the others should be named, too. They are living creatures, after all. They need food and water, and they'll die if I don't care for them! Except for the air plant, it's pretty self-sufficient.

Should I go predictable for the plants with names that people can have, like Pansy, Heather and Rosemary? Or perhaps Mia for the rosemary (as in, Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby)? Now taking suggestions for the pansy and heather... although something Scottish comes to mind for the heather, it being a Scottish-moor type of creature. I think the primroses will be Prue, Piper, Phoebe and Paige from Charmed - there's an episode called "The Primrose Empath!" That would leave the air plant and the succulent trio. Viviane, Igraine and Morgause, maybe, from The Mists of Avalon, for the trio? I'm clearly thinking out loud here.

So, this would mean my babies are:
Air Plant - Aira? Spanish for air, and it's a fairly tropical plant
Pansy - how about Ophelia, with her line from Hamlet, "there's pansies, that's for thoughts"
Heather - Mary, after the Queen of Scots? or Alba, the original Gaelic name for Scotland? Mary was, after all, executed, and perhaps I should not associate my plant with death by chopping bits off!
Rosemary - Mia
Primroses (4) - Prue, Piper, Phoebe, Paige
Succulent Trio - Viviane, Igraine, Morgause

Yes, I like to name my plants, what of it?

Someday I'd like to also have African violets (Rafiki! it means "friend" in Swahili), bamboo (to be named Draca, as it's actually a member of a tree family called drakaina, a Greek term meaning "female dragon," and after the character in the Black Jewels seris), a Peace lily (Pax?), some English Ivy and Devil's Ivy.

It's really starting to be spring around here! The only bad part of all these lovely plants in bloom around town is that my hay fever is kicking in. Achooo!

Someday, I will get a pet. That's the progression: a plant, a pet, a person, because if I can't keep a plant alive, how will I ever be able to take care of a child?!

green thumb, springtime
