Far

I. Changmin.

He picks up the phone and listens to the dial tone click click click away before he reaches out - fingers shaking - and dials the now familiar number. His mouth is dry, his throat sore. He doesn’t know if he’ll be able to speak when the time comes. The call is answered but the person on the other end of the line says nothing. All he hears is the quiet sound of breathing.

A breath in. A breath out.

It’s a sound he knows so intimately.

“I hate you.” He says.

The person on the other end of the line doesn’t answer.

“I hate you.” He says again.

“No you don’t.”

“I want to.”

“I know you do. Where are you?”

“Australia.”

“I thought you sounded far away. Weren’t you supposed to have finished filming there?”

“Re-shoots.”

“Oh.”

Silence.

Conversations shouldn’t be this hard. There are so many things he wants to ask, wants to know, needs to say. ‘How are you?’ ‘How’s Japan?’ ‘What’s it like for you without us?’ ‘Why did you leave me?’

He doesn’t say anything else, doesn’t ask anything. He hangs up.

II. Jaejoong.

He stares at the phone for a good few minutes. The dial tone click click clicks away unaware of what a devastating and final noise it is. Eventually he decides that Changmin isn’t going to call back. He stores the unfamiliar number into his list of contacts. Changmin was probably calling from his hotel; this is just a temporary contact number. He saves it anyway.

He thinks about calling Changmin back.

“I hate you.”

He doesn’t.

III. Changmin.

He doesn’t call anyone else until he gets back to Korea. His family, Yunho, his manager, Jaejoong.

When he does get back he tells everyone that it was because he wanted to fully concentrate on what he was doing. No distractions.

His family try to understand. Yunho sulks, but then cheers up when he gets a present. His manager berates him. He doesn’t care.

He hates Jaejoong.

No he doesn’t.

Yes he does.

He wants to.

IV. Jaejoong.

The caller ID identifies a Korean number, he doesn’t recognize it - it’s probably a pay phone.

He answers it but doesn’t say anything.

“I hate you.” The voice on the other end of the line hisses.

“You know Changmin, if you can’t say anything nice.”

“Fuck you.”

“I see you’re home them.”

“You’re not.”

Japan isn’t that far away. It’s not like he’s on the other side of the world. But still, he can feel the miles collected between them. Physical and figurative. He sighs deeply, his breath crackles against the receiver.

He wants to say ‘I know’ ‘I’m sorry’ ‘I miss you.’ But he doesn’t. He doesn’t know how.

He hangs up.

V. Changmin.

He waits a whole heart beat before calling back. He listens to the phone ring and ring and ring and ring and ring and ring and ring and ring and ring and ring before finally it’s picked up.

“I don’t hate you.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want to hate you.”

“I know.”

“Come home soon.”

“I will.”

He hangs up.

“I love you.” He says to the dial tone as it click click clicks away.
