What a week.
52 campers, 6 counselors, 6 concerts, one week.
9 girls, age 15-16 - 4 popular and chatty (Annie, Laura, Diann, and Amiee), 2 sweet Christian girls (Amanda and Kathleen), 1 punk (Melissa), 1 with a boyfriend at camp (Rebecca), and one that reminds me of myself (Becky). One of me.
Many mishaps.
Sunday, Day 1 - I quickly learn I am going to need to work at being an effective counselor. I'm such a pushover. The girls (well, not all of them) do everything in their power to test my authority. By some miracle, after running around campus, Butler, and trying to assert myself as an authority figure, I make it through Day 1, and treat myself with a visit from my roommates. :)
Monday, Day 2 - First real day. The girls continue to test me and grate on my patience. I once again come to the conclusion that I don't miss Manser. I become the band's music lady and picc player. I monitor practice rooms to make sure kids are doing what they're supposed to. I learn I have to sing in choir, and quickly discover I no longer have a high register - rock on alto! Supervise lunch. Errands. Masterclass - it's so great when things are explained down a level or two. lol I sit in on Ryan's improv class and actually learn a little bit. I spend rec time monitoring practice rooms. Dinner. I gain direction of a flute duet to coach for Fri's chamber concert. I also gain control over woodwind (minus saxophone) sectionals for band. I play in the counselor recital - not too bad but not as well as I would have liked. Go back to the dorm to collapse, big, roomie, and Dman (!) come to visit.
Tuesday, Day 3 - Time to do it all again. Nothing out of the ordinary, less work now that classes are running more smoothly. Jill came to masterclass, yay for not being the only college student. :) Another chamber rehearsal, and the discovery that one of my flute players just doesn't get it no matter how hard I try or how many teaching techniques I use. Frustration. Talk about practice for student teaching! Faculty recital - freaking awesome! Roommates and Pat come to visit - happy night.
Wed, Day 4 - The popular 4 are giving me less trouble. Manser still sucks. Library with the kids during rec time today. Chamber rehearsal (still hopelessly discouraging). Thank God for sectionals afterward where the kids pick it up quick. Student recital - performance by one of the flutes of the Enesco I played last semester, resulting in me feeling totally incompetent. Return to the room to find that my fan has vibrated itself across the desk, resulting in a fall to the floor and a broken motor... Hence, no fan. Went down to the lobby with Amy and splurged on cake, called Andy, got a call from Dman (yay for the boys).
Thurs, Day 5 - Another day, last day of classes. Ran to WalMart for cases of water and to replace my fan. My duet girls played in masterclass - much better than previously, but still no where near it needs to be. Running around on errands - Northern Tier, Hurley's - then to my apt for dress clothes. Chamber rehearsal that was much improved though it could be better. And of course the never-ending frustration of not being able to help someone get it. Cabaret / dance Night for the kids, highlights including a jazz combo, songs from Broadway shows, and a rock band. In depth conversation with one of my popular girls about boys (!), a landmark for the week. Bending the rules for one of the girls and become her hero...
Fri, Day 6 - Rehearsal filled day. My flute duo girls practiced on stage and wowed me - so much better! Had a lesson with Ms. Moulton, and am so relieved to hear she thinks the Hue is on track. Ran around cleaning Butler. Band dress rehearsal, choir dress rehearsal, dragging my girls' stuff up to Butler. Chamber music recital... Yeah. My "problem child" had the second page of the duet upside down and did not realize it until she got there, and didn't fix it until halfway through the page. Doing my thing making cheese and veggie trays for the reception. Chatting with the girls in the floor lobby until way after bedtime.
Sat, Day 7 - LAST DAY! Not to say I hated it, I didn't, but it was the most physically, mentally, and emotionally draining thing I've ever done. Rehearsals in the morning. A meal in Manser for the last time. Concert, which thankfully went well. Last minute cleaning, sorting band music, leaving.

If you read all this, you rock my world. :) I'm now in the apt, waiting for roomie and Pat so we can go out to dinner, washing my clothes and sheets. I'll head back to Rochester tonight for a good night's sleep before my 8am shift in the deli tomorrow. Total of 40 hours this week (the most so far this summer), but hopefully since it's not 24/7, I'll make it through. Less than a month 'til band camp! And I'm here again in a week! Anywho, the rest of my week looks like this.
Sun - work deli 8 - 4:30
Mon - work deli 6am - 11:30 (eeeeeew! and I don't know how to open, so this should be interesting)
Tues - work deli 10 - 3:30
Wed - a blessed day off!! lesson with Jen at 7:30
Thurs - work deli 6:30am - 1
Fri - work deli 6:30am - 2
Sat - work deli 6:30am - 3
Sun - work deli 3 - 9:30
I take that back. This week might just be more tiring than last. But way to be able to go to bed at 10 though.
