“What are you doing?” Alex questioned as he walked into the dining room to find Nate on top of a chair with a stack of phone books under him, attempting to replace a light-bulb in the flimsy chandelier that hung from the ceiling over the dining room table.

“What does it look like?” Nate replied with a huff and again attempted to unscrew the dead light-bulb from its place.

Alex pulled a chair out from under the table and sat down, smirking as he watched Nate try again.

“You know, you’re not going to reach it. You’re too short.” Alex smiled again as Nate stopped mid-reached and fixed him with a glare. Alex knew Nate’s height was a touchy subject for him, but he never missed a chance to tease the younger boy about it.

“Just go get me another phone book, smartass.” Nate said stepping down from the high stack of books and onto another chair, right next the make shift ladder Nate was using.

“Wouldn’t it just be easier to let me do it or to just move the table?” Alex said getting up and moving towards the doorway he had just previously come through.

“No, now I’m on a mission, plus the table is too heavy. So go get me another one.” Nate stated looking up at the chandelier.

“You could have asked me to help move it.” Alex left without another word and went to go find Nate another book, why they had so many was beyond him. It’s probably from when Gabe decided to go on an eco-friendly rampage and decided they couldn’t throw anything out but had to recycle it. Well they are definitely being recycled now, underneath Nate’s feet.

Finding another one in the living room, Alex headed back into the dining room handing the phone book to Nate.

Three. There were three phone books stacked on top of one another, just so Nate could put in a light bulb. It was like one of those bad jokes Ryland always said when he was too drunk to think about what he was saying- How many phone books does it take to help Nate screw in a light bulb? Alex knew the answer to that joke.

Alex watched again as Nate climbed up on to the stack to try yet again. This was not going to end well Alex could tell just by the way the stack swayed underneath Nate.

“Nate…” Alex warned as the younger boy went up to reach the chandelier. Alex moved behind him to catch him if he fell.

Nate’s fingertips grazed the chandelier as he went to grab it. The stack leaned forward as Nate made the catch. Slowly, Nate adjusted his footing so he could reach better, but a phone book is only so big and one of his feet ended up slipping. Catching himself just in time he stood back up on the stack of yellow pages.

“I’m really starting to think I should just do it.” Alex said moving back around to the side of him to talk. “You know your middle name isn’t grace for a reason.” Alex smirked as Nate glared at him for the second time today. He was on a roll today.

“Ok, you know what smartass? How about you get up here and help me?” Nate said motioning for Alex to stand on the chair next to him.

“How about I’ll just do it instead?” Alex said stepping on the chair beside Nate’s.

“No way, I’m doing it too.” Nate said crossing his arms in defiance.

Alex sighed, knowing that an argument with the younger male would just lead to more time being wasted on this simple task an stood up on the chair fully. Only reaching Nate’s chest he put he hands on Nate’s waist to hold him steady. Glancing up at him Alex gave Nate the signal to go.

Nate slowly went to reach again for the chandelier. Standing on his toes he finally grabbed it. Alex watched as he went to go unscrew the dead light bulb. Looking down to see how the phone books were holding he noticed one of them was slipping.

“Hey wait don’t ……” Sounds of crashing and yelling drowned out the next words Alex was about to say.

Laying in a heap on the floor was Alex, Nate, and the phone books. Still in place was the unlit light bulb.

“That’s it, I give up!” Nate said as he moved to remove a phone book on his chest and stood up.

Alex couldn’t help but laugh at the whole situation. Sitting up he looked at Nate giving him a smile. “So next time I’ll do it?”

“Just forget it! The stupid thing can stay for all I care!” Nate shouted as he started throwing the phone books in a pile.

Alex stood up and reached for Nate, giving him a kiss on the forehead.

“Just be happy we didn’t fall on the table."
