Title: Are We Feeling Awkward Yet?
Chapter: Three
Word Count: 2255
Rating: R
Disclaimer: The title is being politely borrowed from The Dear and Departed. This is, obviously, fake and did not happen. I am merely borrowing the names and faces of real life people and none of this is meant in any way to harm their reputation. This is a work of fiction and nothing contained within is thought to be real.
Warning: Contains various remarks to sensitive material. The characters grew their own way and there are hints to events and/or diseases that I had not planned on; as of now, I have not planned to dig into these aspects but that does not mean that the character’s will force me to follow through.
A/N: Written for Jellicle’s Ugly Duckling bunny. (And it has now morphed out of control and I’m more than happy that it did... because it’s been way too long that I’ve been able to write anything of substantial length.)
Summary: He had figured it would be easy to slip past everything and everyone; figured that with all the weight loss, he didn’t look like the same person. Then why is everyone noticing him, remembering him? And what made Jared change?

One Two

Maybe this was how everyone had felt around him. His parents, his brother… his sister. They had all known. Had he been so lost back then that he hadn't realize how uncomfortable he had made them feel??

Hell, he could barely stand to look at Jared and Jared wasn't the victim here; no, that went to his little brother. The poor kid.

Jared would still smile at him, though. Come up to him and throw an arm over his shoulders as if they had been friends for life and that just managed to piss him off a little bit farther. Jared should hate him. And it's not like he isn't just as pissed at Jared. The guy's as dense as a can of beans. No kidding.

Maybe Jared thought that since his Momma had blurted out what had happened that now they're even. Well, they are but not in that damn sense. The stalker had found out for sure that the damn rumor that Jared had apparently freaking started, is as true as the burning fucking sun and now they are even with him knowing something a little personal about Jared. They weren't friends, not even close to it. Knowing one little piece of personal crap about each other didn't mean the past was forgotten… hell, had they never seen each other, friendships didn't form that quickly. So, how in the world did Jared figure they should be buddy-buddy now?

God, never before did he think he'd be wishing for Jared to punch him. He used to pray that he wouldn't be hit the next day at school. On his knees, resting against his bed, he'd plead for forgiveness. Caught up in Steve's lies, the Devil's lies, he'd beg God to understand that Steve was the only one.

Some nights he'd convince himself he was truly born wrong. Questioned why he hadn't been born a female so that the relationship wasn't wrong. Thankfully, he knew damn well he liked his bits the way they were. And now he could realize that it was Steve who had put those thoughts there. That relationship would never have been right, no matter what sex he was born into.

While he was that young teenager, though, he hadn’t realized that. Had ignored those little facts. The terror of teenage love, that.

Why wasn't Jared angry with him, though? He could have stopped it before the bastard had gotten a hold of another innocent kid. He had been selfish.

So fucking selfish.

Before… before Momma had spurted out that there had been another victim, he had been able to lie to himself. He could easily fool himself into believing he was the only one. Even to this day, with the hate and disgust he felt towards Steve, thinking that he was the only one had made him feel special.

So fucking sick but what was he supposed to do about that? Even if it was a manipulative love, sick and wrong… even if it had hurt him… it still felt nice to think that he had actually been loved.

He owed a lot to Steve. Good and bad. Probably more bad but…

And see, that's exactly why he should completely hate Steve. Years later, the bastard still had him doubting himself. Still had his feelings wrapped up in those grimy hands.

How did Jared's brother feel? Obviously, Steve hadn't had full control so maybe the kid was doing better than himself? What was his name anyways?

He knew damn well, now, that he would hate any of the victims if there had been any before him. He'd hate them. Because they could have stopped this…

And he would still be a fat, introverted freak. Though now he was just a skinny, introverted freak so how much good had Steve actually done for him? He had lost the weight because Steve had made him even more uncomfortable with it. Gave him the kick start that he needed to start losing it. Before, he was uncomfortable with it… hated it but he also didn't care. Didn't have any reason to lose it. Then, while he was with Steve and after, he lost it because he was pretty damn sure he would always be alone otherwise.

Fuck, he kept getting side tracked. He wasn't trying to dig into his psyche to understand himselff better. He wanted to understand Jared.

He wanted to know if Jared's brother was the reason for the sudden change of personality. He wanted to know why Jared could stand to be around him, knowing he could have stopped Steve before he got to the poor kid. He wanted to know why Jared was so freaking determined to become his friend.

"Hey," he heard Jared before he fell down to sit next to him, wearing a goofy grin and a huge ass water bottle. It was no wonder he was drinking water all the time, he did not stop talking. "Jason says we got a fifteen minute break so the smokers can stop freaking out."

"Cool." He mumbled, not even lifting his eyes from the floor. No need to look at Jared. He knew the guy was staring him down. Jared could ramble on and on as if he wasn't paying attention but his eyes would never leave him.

"Jason also likes the way you played the part today. Personally, I thought it was better when the kid was angry. You know? I don't think Zack meant for the character to be… empty."

"Don't matter, gotta play the part like Jason wants or he'll take the part from me." He kept his own eyes down, focused on the script in front of him, trying to figure out how he could bring out the whole empty and given-up air when his character threw a punch. He might truly forget to hold back on the punch if he didn't figure that one out… not that Brad didn't deserve it.

"I doubt he'd take it from you. Dude, you're good up there. Way too good for this shitty school. Anyways, I think Jason misses some of that anger. Probably sees the error of his ways so don't be surprised if he tells you to bring back that anger."

Did the bastard have to scoot closer to him? Hell, worse, did he have to throw his arm over his shoulder. He was pretty sure it looked like they were cuddling. The creep probably didn't even realize what they might look like to other people. And yes, he could still call the guy names in his head even if he couldn't completely hate the guy anymore. Swear to goodness, he was a bleeding heart or something. Find out the guys poor kid brother got attacked by the bastard known as Steve and suddenly he could stand to be in the same room. Figures, his brain had always been wired funny. Though, it worked out well enough in the long run. Always better to act when you aren't trying to be on the complete opposite side of the room as someone.

"You're pretty good, too. Why are you still here? You could have transferred out, got a good scholarship or somethin'."

He watched as Jared shrugged, finally looking away. Good note to keep, if the staring got too uncomfortable, just start asking questions about Jared. "I need to stay around here. Help out with the family. Mom doesn't know it, never did keep up with her checkbook too well, but I usually deposit some of my check into her account. She's got to pay for my brother and then bills… so I help out 'cause otherwise… she wouldn't have enough… and if she found out I'd been doin' that, I'm pretty sure she'd have my hide hanging out to dry."

Strike that, ask questions that led back to Jared's family. More so, probably that led back to Jared's brother. "You're brother, you said he'd transferred out. He going to a private school or something like that where he's gotta pay tuition?"

"Yeah, somethin' like that."

His old friends use to say that he was oblivious to a lot of things. Told him he didn't catch on too quick when it involved anything breathing. But, contrary to that belief, he was pretty good at reading people and he wasn't a mean guy. So, he knew it was time to drop that subject even if he wanted to know more about Jared's kid brother.

And no matter how much he can cuss the guy out in his head, he didn't want to be mean. No matter how unwillingly, Jared was the only person he knew in this town. But, that might have something to do with him always either being at school or at home with his Momma, making sure she was alright.

"Huh, you know those smokers always take longer than their fifteen minutes."

"That's 'cause Jason's out there with them, chain smoking. You should go out there someday, you'd be surprised that the fire department don't come running down."

He laughed at that, and yeah, it felt nice to laugh because Jared had put that goofy grin back on his face.

"Oh shit, dude, I almost forgot. There's this show tonight down at the bar. I was wonderin' if you wanted to come and see."

"I can't…"

If someone just got turned down they wouldn't still be smiling like that. Though, Jared seemed to be immune to the word no. Didn't seem to understand anything that went against what he wanted. He was pretty sure Jared was the same guy from high school just slightly nicer.

"Nah, my mom's been wanting to meet the woman who keeps feedin' her kid so damn good so she could go over there and neither of us would have to worry about your mom. And, the best part, she wouldn't know that the two of us were trying to baby her!"

"You're evil, Jared. She will catch on and then we'll both be standin' there, getting our asses handed to us with her lecture on how she's perfectly fine."

"Yeah, 'cept she won't because she wants to get your ass outta the house before you start looking like an albino."

He laughed, shaking his head. "You're warped. Sure, whatever then. As long as she's not alone, it's all good. The hospital has started sending those sit-in nurses during the day."

"Yeah, I heard. She called me up." Jared said with a smile and wink. Why the hell was his Momma calling Jared? That was just wrong. "Says she liked it better when they were sending us volunteers. Said we were much better company, even the shitty ones and none of us tried to change her diet."

"I know she didn't say shitty."

"Nah, she said it all posh like. Like she hasn't cussed in her life. One of the doctor's had called her before you came down, while I was there. Said she should go into a nursing home. She chunked that heavy ass frying pan at the wall and told him to fuck off. I'm not even kidding."

He smiled softly, "Yeah… her anger always did get the best of her. She chunked a paper weight at a doctor once."

"Shit, man. Why'd she do that?"

Obviously, Jared wasn't as clued in as he was because had he been in Jared's shoes he would have changed the conversation. What with his shoulders sinking in slightly and the way his eyes locked on the ground. Yeah.

"Wanted to use shock therapy to cure my depression."

"What the fuck? They still use that?"

"Yeah, that pissed her off really well."

Silence. Silence was nice. He didn't really want to dig into that either. Probably should have changed the subject himself. That might have been a bigger hint to numbskull sitting next to him.

"Creepy. Well, you might not like the band that's playing. Tara's a lead singer and she's one angry chick. Was Jake's friend before he… transferred out. But I still think it'd be fun."

Well… at least he could catch on. Even if it did take him a while. Or maybe he was giving Jared too much credit and he was actually that cruel hearted person he had imagined back in high school. He could see one of Alex's drawings explaining this guy in a nutshell. Though, she always had a way of making even the most evil things look cute. She'd probably draw Jared with this cute little smile, posing like the perfect model and just draw a black, little, very little, heart in the center. Even if he told her that the creep had intentionally made him dig deeper than he wanted to. She'd just tell him that he needed it.

Sometimes, he wasn't sure she was one of his friends. She never would side with him unless she felt like it. He would never go to her if he wasn't in the mood to hear the truth. Told him once that he was just being a baby, that was, of course, when he didn't want to go home. All he wanted was for her to tell him that she'd still be there when he came back, that nothing was gonna change.

Thankfully, he had John to do that for him.

Huh, Jake. It didn't help to know Jared's brother's name. Now he had a name to another victim. And the guilt was just a bit sharper than before. At least he didn't have a face yet.

A/N:

Note: Yes, they do indeed still use Shock therapy. It's used as a last resort to treat sever depression that is not being effected by medication. Its side effects are short term memory lose. I believe it's a 4 to 8 week treatment, (forgive me, I took personality last semester and really could care less about shock therapy; I'm disgusted by it and believe it's unethical. *shivers*,) with about 4-12 session. It has about an 80% effective in completely curing it. They also still use lobotomies. (God, are we still in the dark ages.) Though it's much more… centralized now. Some Canadians came up with a new technique a few years ago, which included cutting out a small section of the brain. *shakes and shivers* I'm going for psychology and no psychiatry for a reason. Other than the medical school needed, I prefer therapy compared to those… things. Not to mention that medication only deals with the issue as long as you're still on it. It doesn't cure the issue. A lot of psychologist work with psychiatrist so that the issues can be stopped for immediate stopping of the symptoms but use the therapy to cure the problem. (Of course, therapy is not a viable options for certain mental problems.)

Now that we are done with the psychology lesson… sorry. I really enjoy my major, apparently.

Okay, again with the apologizes. I'm really sorry on how long it keeps taking me to update. The only excuse I have is that there are a lot of issues in life that are weighing me down and getting in the way, so I'm sorry.

This is the last chapter in this part. (I wanted to call them scene's since the title of the big thing all together is Act of Play but Kam told me it was corny and cliché. -_-) Obviously, I'm not done yet, I still have a few secrets to yank out. Jared's brother being one of them. But, since I don't know when the next part will be out I'm willing to say that we'll meet someone from Jensen's old school. An old friend of his. Also, I realize that it may seem like I'm getting off track from the overweight!Jensen comes back home all skinny idea path but not really, yet. I have plans to keep introducing Jensen to people from his past and how the react to his change… but in a subtle way. Some of you have also brought up the fact that this is bringing back your own memories from high school… and I'm really sorry about that =( Feel free to vent any frustration.

Also, I hope no one finds it odd that they're using the teacher's first name. I figured that Drama might be as lax as my sister's art department. All the teacher's know the student's name and all the students call them either by their first name or by nicknames. Very lax in that department, completely different than in my own psychology department. I've decided I like the art department better so… =D

And last, and maybe least, I've made a play list (even though you might night care.) I do it with any story that manages to get longer than just a one off… though, I warn you… I love almost every type of music which gives me more to work with but can completely change tones.
