Another Monday

This Monday felt a lot like last monday. What was weird was that I ended up meeting with another psychology professor about research work today, just like i did last monday. It caught me off guard and I'm just glad that i checked my mail when i did! I was about to do psychology homework in the computer lab and checked my mail out of habit. Lo and behold there was a message from Dr. Cano! Her message told me to come by her office that day at noon. I look at my watch and it's 12:05. I got the email barely just in time. I ran over to the building her office was in and made it at 12:10.

She was also very pleasant just like Prof. Casey. I enjoyed her a lot and it felt a little more like an interview than my meeting with Prof. Casey. She asked me specific questions and took notes on me. She went over what they're doing in her lab right now and showed me her website. She gave me really straightforward information and answers. She went over what tasks are available for students to do. The two main ones were interviewers and video coders. Her lab is dealing with Couples where one at least has chronic musculoskeletal pain and how this and distress affect the couples mental and physical health. THere would be two interviewers to a couple. Those in the couple are interviewed separately. And then they are both placed in a room where they interact with each other and are asked questions. This is video taped and that's where the job of the video coders comes in. They watch the tapes and look for certain signs such as empathy. These tasks require training. TO be an interviewers, i would be trained for 9 hours a week, for 8 weeks. If i wanted to be a video coder, I would be trained for 6 hours a week, and for about 6-7 weeks. She told me to email her before the end of the week to tell which task i would be interested in and my availablitiy.

I am definitely interested in this lab and I am 100% that i'm going to do it. I'm not sure which task i want to do. THe interviewing sounds very interesting and i would get to interact with the participants. Both tasks seem interesting and i wish i could learn both!

The one thing i'm not sure of, is if i'm going to participate in another lab, Prof. Casey's lab. She was a little less clear on how many hours a week she expects and what particular tasks she has for students. I'm not sure if i'll be trying to do too much by doing two and i'm worried about times overlapping. Whether or not i participate in another lab also affects which task i might want to do in Dr. Cano's lab because one requires more time than the other. So if anyone has any input or advice I would appreciate it. Either way I'm definitely excited :)
